Marty Smith has done it again, written for Curatti a great artilcle with insights, strategy and takeaways that can literally help you to stand above the crowd.

I don't usually make these kinds of statements but after reading this more than once and (you will want to do this too), what he's saying makes perfect sense!

“blue ocean strategy” in the book by Kim and Mauborgne. The book is an important read for Small To Medium Sized Businesses (SMBs), but practical and immediate needs may make adoption of a “blue ocean process” difficult.

Here's just a sample of what you'll find in the piece:

Start With A SWOT

Creating an honest Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis for your website and 3 to 5 competitors is a great place to start a “blue ocean” search.

Create a spreadsheet - See in more depth in the article

Creating a “blue ocean strategy”

Recognize WHERE you are strong, evaluates competitor strengths and then turns all previous assumptions about your business on its head just enough to find a unique value proposition,a value proposition that exists in uncontested - see how to do this in the aritlce

The Future of Digital Marketing is Already Here

The Future of Digital Marketing is Already Here | Retail Environment | Scoop.it

The future of digital marketing is already here, especially when it comes to presenting highly engaging, personalized, relevant advertising to consumers.

... Let’s think back to the movie Minority Report, which was filmed in 2002 but set in 2054. In a famous scene, Tom Cruise’s character walks into a Gap store. He scans his retinas, and the ad begins speaking to him: “Welcome back to the Gap Mr. Yakamoto, how are those assorted tank tops working for you?”

This movie predicted that, 50 years from now, personalized, 1:1 marketing would be the status quo. Director Steven Spielberg must have had a crystal ball – except that his timing was off. This type of personalized 1:1 marketing is much closer to reality than we’d think, thanks to the advent of tools and technologies like iBeacons (which can trigger messages sent to your phone based on your proximity to a certain location) and richly customized user experiences (easily implemented with real-time personalization tools)....

How Brick-and-Mortar Stores Are Becoming More Like Online Retailers

How Brick-and-Mortar Stores Are Becoming More Like Online Retailers | Retail Environment | Scoop.it

Between the confluence of the Web and e-commerce and the rise in hours at work for U.S. workers, brick-and-mortar visits are becoming worryingly infrequent. Online shopping is rapidly overtaking high-street sales with the U.S. Department of Commerce spotting a 3.4% quarterly pickup in e-commerce sales compared to 0.6% for brick-and-mortar retailers during the fourth quarter of 2013.

However, thanks to modern technology, traditional retailers now have a chance to fight back. Strategy consulting firm Control Group put together a thorough report examining several emerging trends in retail technology. Especially, state-of-the-art technologies that make dynamic pricing for brick-and-mortar retailers could indeed enable them to turn the tide in the battle of clicks versus bricks....

Francey Smith's curator insight, October 19, 2014 5:01 PM

My focus and experience is non-food retailing. Today's customer for retail is already purchasing from many channels under the same name plate. She (and he) have been aware of multi-channels for several years and will continue to do so for the future near and beyond. Don't fool yourself into thinking that the "multi channel" customer is a fad!

The smart retailer today follows their customer (hopefully by name, address both postal and email, at a SKU level and then trends this robust customer data over time) on all channels.

Amazon takes showrooming to next level with image recognition

Amazon takes showrooming to next level with image recognition | Retail Environment | Scoop.it

Amazon is tightening its grip on showrooming with a new image recognition application feature that cuts down on the number of steps it takes for a consumer to find and buy a product. The new image recognition feature is called flow and builds on a previous bar code-based app technology that let consumers scan UPC codes on products to then shop them from Amazon. Amazon’s newest iteration of app-based showrooming comes at the same time that the company is trying to cozy up to retailers with a possible mobile point-of-sale service.
