Few retail segments have proven immune as discount shoe-sellers, outdoor goods shops, and consumer electronics retailers have all found themselves headed for reorganisation.

This is not just a US centric issue. Are times as tough for retail elsewhere though? Are the warnings of nearly 20 years ago about how the internet would disrupt retail really starting to show? Is ecommerce the main issue? Or many retailers inability to provide a product, service and experience that their customers are seeking?

Have been hearing for 15 years about the death of retail to e-commerce. Mind you when Warren Buffet takes a stake or in this case drops a stake; history shows he tends to know where things are going. As Buffet himself has said "Retailing is like shooting at a moving target". One of Walmart's ex-CEO's admitted his greatest regret was not invest more and faster in the digital economy. In the last 3 years, whilst Amazon shares have climbed 119%, Walmart have fallen 21%. Buffet has also previously asked "Can you think of an example of a retailer that was successfully turned around?"

Consumer spending on experiences, rather than more traditional sectors like fashion retail and luxury goods, saw the biggest growth during the first two weeks of Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), revealed payments technology company Visa.

Amazon reveals grocery shop with no checkout - "Just Walk Out". Apparently customers will be able to shop, grab & go; all 'check out' including payments will be via Amazon Go. Be interesting to see how consumers view their experience at "Just Walk Out" and whether some will feel it is an 'annex to a website'; as some have felt with Amazon's physical book stores.

Kering Results Show 17% Surge at Gucci, Slip at Bottega Veneta

Gucci confirmed its turnaround with a 17 percent rise in third-quarter comparable sales, helping make up for a 10.9 percent sales drop at sister brand Bottega Veneta, parent Kering said on Tuesday.
Angus Woodhead's insight:
Results are in at Kering and overall it's great news for the group. Gucci which accounts for over 60% of the groups profit was up 17% on a comparable sales basis. Bottega Veneta though, which has been the star in recent years, was down 11%. BoF's article has a run down on the results within the group.
