Happy Birthday I.M. Pei ...!

Happy Birthday I.M. Pei ...! | retail and design | Scoop.it

Ieoh Ming Pei, the Chinese-American architect who is arguably the greatest living member of the modernist generation of architects, turns 97 today. When he received his Pritzker Prize in 1983, the jury citation stated that he “has given this century some of its most beautiful interior spaces and exterior forms.”

Though known as a modernist, Pei has rejected the implications of globalism inherent in the “International Style,” instead advocating contextual development and variation in style. He has commented that “the important distinction is between a stylistic approach to the design; and an analytical approach giving the process of due consideration to time, place, and purpose.” On a trip to China in 1974 he even urged Chinese architects to look more to their architectural tradition, rather than designing in a Western style.

Pei’s most well known work is likely his crystalline extension to the Louvre in Paris; other highly influential works include the Bank of China Tower in Hong Kong, the East Building of the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC and the JFK Presidential Library in Boston.

The volume consists of two bodies joined by a bridge-library that spans a height difference of 85 cm, joining the public areas with the private spaces and generating a mezzanine 3.75 m high in the back space of the gallery. Since the site is elongated, the public spaces are laid out towards the main facade, articulating random terraces on the front volume, generating corners that reinforce the relationship with the landscape.

Soviet Bus Stops

Soviet Bus Stops | retail and design | Scoop.it

"Photographer Christopher Herwig has covered more than 30,000 km by car, bike, bus and taxi in 13 countries discovering and documenting these unexpected treasures of modern art. From the shores of the Black Sea to the endless Kazakh steppe, the bus stops show the range of public art from the Soviet era and give a rare glimpse into the creative minds of the time."

Via Seth Dixon

Seth Dixon's curator insight, April 6, 11:47 AM

This is a delightful glimpse into a time gone by, and what makes it even more surprising is that few would expect such creative architecture to dot the cultural landscape of the old Soviet Union.  I was recently looking at a photo gallery of old Russian Orthodox churches and just like these Soviet bus stops, they are perfect subjects for classic cultural landscape studies.  Geography students can analyze and interpret the cultural, political and economic material landscape as this photographer has.  What do these elements of the landscape mean?  How does it make us re-evaluate the society that created them?

Watch the Northern Lights from Glass Igloos at Hotel Kakslauttanen, Finland

Watch the Northern Lights from Glass Igloos at Hotel Kakslauttanen, Finland | retail and design | Scoop.it

What better way to view the northern lights than from your bed through a glass roof?

That’s what the accommodation Finnish hotel Kakslauttanen offers guests within a village of geodesic dome glass igloos. The unique setting merges old and new using a traditional igloo form, composed of angular glass framework.

The igloos are created from a highly effective thermal glass which keeps the insides nice and cosy while temperatures outside plummet to -30˚. This special glass manages to stop condensation from forming on the inside while also preventing frost from settling on the outside of the igloo to offer guests a clear view of the northern lights...

The world's first net-zero energy skyscraper rises in Indonesia

The world's first net-zero energy skyscraper rises in Indonesia | retail and design | Scoop.it
The Pertamina Energy Tower's curved façade is precisely calibrated for Jakarta's proximity to the equator to mitigate solar heat gain year-round.

The world's first net-zero energy skyscraper soon will grace the center of Jakarta, Indonesia — the Pertamina Energy Tower. When it's finished in 2019, it will be 99 stories high and serve as the headquarters of the national energy company. In addition to the 20,000 people who will work there, it will be the centerpiece of a campus that has a mosque, a sports center and a 2,000-seat auditorium for the performing arts.

Shaped like a funnel, the top of the tower opens at the top, capturing wind and sucking it inside to run a series of vertical wind turbines that provide 25 percent of the building's electricity.

The building is designed to be a symbol of Indonesia's commitment to sustainable development. Find more details at the link.

Tracy Galvin's curator insight, April 24, 11:32 AM

Hopefully, this will be the wave of the future. The building is designed specifically for the place it is going to sit and how it can gain the most energy from the natural resources available. They are taking advantage of the sunlight and geothermal sources of energy that do not pollute the environment and never run out.
