"Since March 26, 2009, I have been using Reader's "star" functionality to highlight SEO resources I feel will be useful to me again at some point in the future, or warrant sharing with my team.

 

The result of this obsessive reading and starring of RSS feeds was an easily-accessible, hand-curated database of great articles covering almost any conceivable SEO topic stretching back 4 years.

 

Google allowed me to get a backup of them as a .json file. The bad news was that no RSS reader (to my knowledge) had the functionality to import them alongside the feeds I subscribe to.

 

End result: I was faced with the task of cleaning and formatting the data in the .json file if I wanted to still be able to access my 4 year-old collection of useful blog posts and news items.

 

I soon realized that although this task was onerous, it would provide me with a great opportunity to: 1. Build a great resource for other SEO professionals 2. Understand how my perception of "a great SEO article" had changed since 2009 3. Rate the major SEO publications based on whose feed had received the most stars..."

To determine which pages are relevant to a search query, Facebook utilizes a natural language processor (both to suggest search terms and identify connections) combined with algorithms that examine the “nodes” or connections of a searcher’s network to find content friends have “liked” that match the search. Graph Search can also consider second-degree connections or friends of friends, as well as content which has been shared either directly with the searcher or publicly on Facebook.

 

Unlike standard search engines, Facebook owns all of the data (page posts, photos, videos, etc.)which has ever been posted to the network. This inherent advantage enabled Facebook to implement a unique indexing structure to categorize the data based on a number of predefined properties. This indexing of owned data allows Facebook to quickly search, sort, identify and return relevant content. 

 

They dubbed this infrastructure “Unicorn.” Similar to a standard search engine, it supports search queries including “multi-hop” queries in a series of steps while searching “nodes” in a similar style to the way a search engine utilizes keywords.

Although most marketers I talk to understand the reasons why their brands should have a social media presence, there are many who still don’t understand the real value of social media. They know their customers expect them to be there in order to be taken seriously, but they don’t understand the real potential. To complicate it, there is still that dangling question about social media ROI, and how that can affect all businesses around the globe.


Coca-Cola has always been a brand that seems to get it right when it comes to social media, and just last month an article published entitled Coca-Cola Clarifies: Social Media Is Crucial & Drives In-Store Sales. It goes into detail about how they view their social media efforts, and how they measure their social media ROI.


What’s important to remember though is that a measurable, financial social media ROI isn’t just being experienced by the big companies. It doesn’t take more than a quick Google search to find countless posts about small business owners who have reaped the rewards of building relationships through social media. This topic hits close to home for us because Bit Rebels wouldn’t exist as we know it today without social media. Social media has always been a very big part of what we do, and we’ve met many of our clients through our engagement in social media.


Cadbury’s brand Wispa, which has been gotten a lot of attention through social media, put together this infographic called 10 Examples Of ROI In Social Media. Although I would like to see someone put together an infographic like this that highlights small businesses, it’s still inspiring to read about the big ones.
