Purple Moderates are Coming....

Purple Moderates are Coming.... | Restore America | Scoop.it

Purple Moderates  is an organization  that was created as a result of running for Congress and writing this book, The Reluctant Republican. It was not enough  to just be critical of the process of politics that exist in our country, but that criticism should lead to a positive solution. Purple Moderates is a pragmatic and positive solution to the partisian viewpoint that creates gridlock.

Purple Moderates is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization whose mission is to educate, encourage and support a platform that will solve problems through tolerance, compromise and wisdom. That platform must be based on evidence not merely theory, must include a consideration for all viewpoints, and must look to the success of the USA over the sucess of one party.

Wise decisions can only be made when all the facts are known and considered. Listening to all sides on an issue, and an open dialogue will reveal the evidence needed to make wise choices.

We must place pragmatic solutions over political rhetoric to move America forward.

The majority of Americans are moderate in their political views and are willing to compromise to solve problems.

The next four years, no matter who occupies the White House or Congress, must be years of moving forward and solving our problems.

The first goal of Purple Moderates  is to establish a central website which will identify all organizations that reflect moderate, centrisit and bipartisian interests. For example, on a national level, we will list NoLabels.org and for local grassroots organizations, we will list TheVillageSquare.org. We will list all pundits, blogs, speakers and authors who are moderate or centrist in their viewpoint. We will include a section to educate on issues with different viewpoints and a "View From The Center."

We will establish a political action committee, Moderate-Majority Pac,  to suport and encourage those elected officials and candidates who exhibit thoughtful views, statesmen like qualities of charecter who will tolerate the viewpoints of others and work with others towards sucessful resolution of issues for the greater good of the nation. We will give support to these officials to assist them in accomplishing these objectives.

A portion of the profits received from the sale of The Reluctant Republican will go towards Purple Moderates.

Please make a contribution to the Success of America by contributing to Purple Moderates.

If you value the value of moderation and the genius of compromise, please join with us as a powerful voice for America.

Thank you,

Barbara Olschner

Founder and Executive Director, Purple Moderates, Inc.

Veterans Testify on Rapes and Scant Hope of Justice

Veterans Testify on Rapes and Scant Hope of Justice | Restore America | Scoop.it

by JENNIFER STEINHAUER (NY Times)

Choking back tears and in voices edged with rage, two women and a man who served in the American military told a Senate panel on Wednesday how they were raped by superiors and then ridiculed or ignored by military officials from whom they sought help.

The three former service members, the first military sexual assault victims to testify before a Senate panel, described a pervasive culture of harassment and danger in which victims had little or no redress.

One spoke of a rape she endured during her first months of service, and another told of a sergeant who stripped naked and danced on a table during an official sexual harassment training session. After spending a year repeatedly harassed, Rebekah Havrilla, a former Army sergeant deployed to Afghanistan from 2006 to 2007, was raped by a superior a week before returning home.

“I chose not to do a report of any kind because I had no faith in my chain of command,” Ms. Havrilla said. When she sought help from an Army chaplain, she said, he told her “the rape was God’s will” and urged her to go to church.

3 former members of the US military testify in front of the Senate in an attempt to change military policy on sexual harassment in light of new evidence and testimony to sexual harassment in basic training at Lackland Air Force Base among others. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is leading the charge to reform sexual harassment policies and believes putting a human face on the all too often anonymous victims will help sway the Senate's view.

NEFAC / Suffolk Law Panel Looks at How “Citizens United” Affected the 2012 Presidential Election

NEFAC / Suffolk Law Panel Looks at How “Citizens United” Affected the 2012 Presidential Election | Restore America | Scoop.it

How did the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark 2010 decision on Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission play out during the 2012 presidential election?

The ruling that cleared the way for corporate and union contributions to political campaigns changed the financial landscape in ways to be explored during a March 4 panel discussion organized by the Suffolk University Law School‘s chapter of the New England First Amendment Coalition.

The discussion will begin at 6 p.m. in the school’s first floor function room and will be moderated by Prof. Michael Avery, co-author of The Federalist Society: How Conservatives Took the Law Back from the Liberals.

The panelists include:

Jeffrey Clements - Author of Corporations Are Not People, and president of Free Speech for People, a non-partisan campaign to overturn Citizens United.

Gregory V. Sullivan - A NEFAC board member and adjunct professor at Suffolk, he’s president of the Hingham-based media law firm Malloy & Sullivan.

Pam Wilmot – Executive Director of Common Cause of Massachusetts, she’s as been an advocate for government reform and consumer and environmental issues for over 20 years.

Scott Van Voorhis – A Boston-based financial and investigative reporter and a blogger on financial issues. He was one of three authors of the investigation Power Players: Massachusetts corporate titans bankroll key races as restraints vanish on political spending.

The discussion, presented as part of NEFAC’s observation of Sunshine Week, will be followed by a Q&A session and a reception.

5 truths about the drone war

5 truths about the drone war | Restore America | Scoop.it

by MARC AMBINDER (The Week)

Maybe Jacques Derrida, the French dauphin of deconstruction, was right: In the beginning and end was the word. Logos. In war, words matter. Take our drone war, which is not, in point of fact, a war, and involves "drones" only incidentally. And yet the concept of hovering, amoral surveillance machines with missiles attached to them is pretty much the way everyone describes a much different reality.

1. The drone war is not fought primarily with drones. The United States targets members of al Qaeda, al Qaeda affiliates and now, apparently, affiliates of those affiliates, using a comprehensive array of technical intelligence resources, backed up by fighter jets with conventional bombs, submarines that launch missiles, other platforms that launch missiles, and, sometimes, missiles attached to remotely piloted vehicles. The policy is best described as targeted surveillance and killing of the aforementioned groups. In certain areas, it is easier to fly airplanes; in certain places in Pakistan, RPVs launched by Afghanistan will do the job. The munition and vehicle used depends on the target, his location, his importance, and the resources available to the military and CIA at the time.

2. The CIA does not "fly" drones. It "owns" drones, but the Air Force flies them.

Beyond Fox News

Beyond Fox News | Restore America | Scoop.it

by MAISIE ALLISON (The American Conservative)

Peter Viereck reintroduced conservatism to modern America in 1949 with his classic Conservatism Revisited. “This was the book,” wrote George Nash in his seminal history of 20th-century conservative thought, “which, more than any other of the early postwar era, created the new conservatism as a self-conscious intellectual force.”

Viereck’s conservatism was pre-political, “more contemplative than activist.” In fact, he believed that to identify conservatism primarily in political terms would be self-defeating. He opposed the notion of a “conservative movement” before it even got off the ground.

He directed an early salvo at God and Man at Yale, which most of today’s conservatives consider a founding text of the movement (in most cases, without having read it). In a 1951 review published in the New York Times, Viereck took issue with the young William F. Buckley Jr.’s indiscriminate alarmism... MORE

U.S. budget deficit $203.5 billion in February

U.S. budget deficit $203.5 billion in February | Restore America | Scoop.it

by GREG ROBB, Marketwatch

For the first five months of fiscal 2013, the U.S. ran a deficit of $494 billion, $87 billion less than the same period in fiscal 2012.

If lawmakers hold fiscal policy steady, the deficit for this year will total $845 billion, about $240 billion less than the fiscal 2012 deficit and the first deficit below a trillion since fiscal 2008, according to the Congressional Budget Office projections.

The improvement in the deficit will be helped, in part, by automatic across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration that went into effect on March 1.

The improvement in February was driven by a 19% increase in revenue compared with same month one year ago.

Two factors were at play behind the gain. The government received more revenue from higher payroll taxes as a temporary cut in payroll taxes expired at the end of 2012.

And there was a decline in tax refunds, likely the result of the delay in the tax filing system due to last-minute negotiations in early January between the White House and Congress to avert the “fiscal cliff.”

In February, the government spent $326 billion and took in $123 billion in revenue.

Spending was down 3% from February 2012.    MORE

To heck with partisan. Deficit is imaginary. Debt is real. The sentence beginning IN FEBRUARY is the meaningful piece. We obviously have a revenue problem.
