From rhetoric to rights: global response to human trafficking

From rhetoric to rights: global response to human trafficking | Resources on trafficking | Scoop.it

This paper from Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law

argues for a human rights approach to trafficking and contemporary slavery. It concludes that recognizing sex slavery and sexual violence are necessary but not sufficient responses to trafficking and the wider spectrum of sexual abuse and transnational labor exploitation.

Adolescent girls and migration in the developing world

Adolescent girls and migration in the developing world | Resources on trafficking | Scoop.it

This policy brief from the Population Council argues that despite the positive potential of migration for adolescent girls, migrant girls are largely ignored in policy and programs designed to reach migrants and adolescents. It concludes that in order to reduce the risk of trafficking and exploitation for migrant girls, they need to be connected with safe places to stay and trusted social connections in order to ensure a ‘smooth landing.’

Trafficking in persons report 2013

Trafficking in persons report 2013 | Resources on trafficking | Scoop.it

This report from the U.S State Department argues that ending modern slavery must remain a foreign policy priority. It takes an unflinching view at human trafficking around the world, what governments are doing, and what they are failing to do. The is a heavy emphasis on the need for victim identification in order for survivors to get the services they need, participate in legal proceedings, and have their voices heard.

The Gendered Dimensions of Sex Trafficking

The Gendered Dimensions of Sex Trafficking | Resources on trafficking | Scoop.it

This paper from the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law is largely based on the author's experiences in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It argues that the entire trafficking cycle from beginning to end is highly gendered: from the root causes that make women vulnerable to trafficking, to the normalization and implicitness of demand, and the gendered institutional responses and policy approaches to anti-trafficking. Human rights should be prioritized in anti-trafficking response instead of  law enforcement, migration and prostitution.
