fantastic childrens programming tool

Mel Wruck's curator insight, June 6, 2013 8:06 AM

Scratch is a visual programming environment that allows users to make their own games, interactive stories and animations. Using scratch from a young age can assist in developing a solid foundation of knowlege that can help prepare students fpr use of higher level programming languages and maths. You can write programs in Scratch not only to solve problems in maths but also to help you understand the problems too. There are a range of progrmaming tasks that support a variety of topics in maths.

Geneviève Pearson's curator insight, June 7, 2013 1:42 AM

Draft Australian Curriculum 'Digital Technologies processes and production skill'- Specification, algorithms and implementaion:

6.7 "Design and implement digital solutions using
visual programs with user input, branching and
iteration"

8.9 Develop and modify programs with user
interfaces involving branching, repetition or
iteration and subprograms in a general-purpose
programming language

Scratch is a software program that supports students to design and program their own digital stories, games and animations. It provides a platform in which students can use their design skills to implement digital solutions through inputting and reordering commands.

This software would be best utilised across school years 5 to 8. Depending on the expected outcome, the use of this software can be manipulated to be used at different levels of complexity. It is also a free download and is a program students can explore in their own time.
