As a writer, I find this set of predictions both interesting and, well, less than overwhelming. I'd like to see more creativity, especially with regard to the "least likely" possibilities, and less focus on tech companies. I'm more interested in thinking about what life might be like, than in which social media giant is on top. What predictions do you have, and what do you think are the odds for or against?

Ness Crouch's curator insight, April 19, 2013 2:11 PM

Hmmm can we predict the future... will be interesting to see what happens with these tools.

Q. How are we best preparing our students with 21st century fluencies in our schools given these predictions?

"Literacy implies a fuller understanding and a rounder knowledge. A literate person is aware of multiple information sources, the pros and cons of media forms, and the value and credibility of information. The Myth Of Digital Citizenship And Why We Need To Teach It Anyway | EdReach | InformationFluencyTransliteracyResearchTools | Scoop.it
At one time in the not so distant past there were no cell phones. And then everything changed at a rate faster than the speed of amending a student handbook. I can distinctly remember the first time one of my 8th grade students brought a cell phone to school. It really wasn’t that big of a deal, more of a novelty really. I mean one student with a cell phone had next to no bearing on our day to day school operations. But then a second student brought a cell phone.

Joyce Valenza's insight:

Duarte suggests we ask these questions:  "What you want to get out of the time you have with the group. Do you need to simultaneously inform, entertain, and persuade your audience to adopt a line of thinking or to take action? Or do you need to gather more information, have a discussion, or drive the group toward consensus to get to your desired next step?"

Using Wikipedia in information literacy instruction

As an information literacy instructor at Auburn University, it has been a perpetual struggle to teach students how to successfully search for library resources when they come to their one-time library sessions with only a broad paper topic and no idea how to narrow it down. A student recently told me regarding an English composition due in a few days, “The topic is so broad, I can’t pick an argument. I don’t even know where to start.” I began encouraging students to use a resource that they feel comfortable with as a starting point—Wikipedia.

It is better to be positive about something that students use rather than negative. As long as they know the pitfalls it is a good place to start. Just not the place to stay!

Karen Draper's curator insight, January 29, 7:49 AM

This is what I teach my students-- get ideas from Wikipedia, use it as a jumping point. Make sure all info is backed up by primary & secondary sources.

Monica Crane-Gatto's curator insight, January 31, 8:39 PM

Using Wikipedia as a starting point can assist in narrowing a search that will lead into vetted databases research.
