News from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University

Combining new tools, such as marker-assisted selection (MAS) with time-honored methods, Dr. Dilip Panthee carries on NCSU’s strong tradition in plant breeding, developing hardier, higher-yielding plants for NC's $30B/year tomato industry.

 

NCSU's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) has the nation’s largest university plant breeding program; and Pantheeproudly follows in the footsteps of Dr. Randy Gardner, a retired breeder credited with developing the cultivars used on some 60-75% of the vine-ripe tomatoes grown in the Eastern US.

 

Working at the Mt. Horticultural Crops Research & Extension Center in Mills River, Panthee focuses on developing tomato breeding lines and cultivars with three traits: disease resistance, fruit quality and stress tolerance. That’s because, in a survey he conducted, these three traits were the ones NC  growers reported needing the most.

Agricultural sustainability is one of the key challenges for societies throughout the world.
CALS Research, NCSU's insight:

Faculty from the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Poole College of Management at NC State have developed a unique Executive Course focused on agricultural sustainability. This science-based, 2-day course is the first in the U.S. that integrates science, economics, and business management. It informs corporate executives on the current factors driving changes in resource availability, environmental regulation, and climate change that are impacting North American & global agriculture.

 

The course also discusses successful business models emerging as corporations explore appropriate paths for a sustainable future. The initial series of courses is being presented to managers and executives of major agricultural corporations.  The purpose is to help prepare leaders in the private sector for the challenging times ahead.

North Carolina brewers, growers, researchers and beer drinkers agree that with the right hops variety and the right investments, hops could be a robust niche industry in this region and in the mountains, where there are fledgling hops farms.

Read about the work of N.C. State Extension Associate Scott King, who is helping with NC hops variety trials, run by Dr. Jeanine Davis, to try to identify hops varieties which will thrive in North Carolina's soils and climate. The effort targets small local breweries and complements Sierra Nevada's recent move to North Carolina, near the Mountain Crops Horticultural Research Station.

"The third day of Dean Richard Linton’s cross-state trek took him to eastern North Carolina for a tour of the Center for Environmental Farming Systems [CEFS] in Goldsboro, bookended by stops in Clinton and Wallace."

 

"The CEFS is a partnership of N.C. State, N.C. A&T and the NCDA&CS. The 2,000-acre research farm in Goldsboro is one of the nation’s largest centers for the study of sustainable food and farming systems. Its mission is to develop and promote food and farming systems that protect the environment, strengthen local communities and provide economic opportunities in this state and beyond."

 

CEFS staff lead an information-rich tour of facilities for organic farming research which includes soil chemistry and emissions, relevant to climate change; pastured livestock; local food, including the 10% Campaign; forages; the dairy; the Good Agricultural Practices (GAP)-certified postharvest handling area; and more.

 

He also toured Prestage Farms, recent NCSU donor for whom the Department of Poultry Science was named, and visited with another NCSU supporter, Wendell Murphy.

Tyler Sowers  hails from the small town of Peletier, but that hasn’t stopped him from making big news on an international level.
CALS Research, NCSU's insight:

Tyler is a junior iin CALS, majoring in Plant & Soil Science. His research on using polyacrylamide (PAM) to flocculate soil particles which makes them fall out of solutio in water may be used to reduce sediment, the primary pollutant of our streams and rivers. He has developed a method to measure how much turbidity, and PAM, is in the water, with regulatory uses.

The College of Agriculture & Life Sciences has a long history of agricultural partnership with Croatia, whose agricultural history is rich with crops such as olives, grapes, herbs, and more.

New research suggests that vermicompost, a worm-created soil additive, helps plants grow with more vigor, and makes them more resistant to disease and insects, than those grown with other types of composts and fertilizers.

Rhonda Sherman, vermicomposting specialist in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State University, comments in this article on the special properties of worm-generated compost and the suitability of certain types of vermicompost for certain plants.

 

Ms. Sherman also runs the only annual training vermicomposting in the world. The next Vermicomposting Conference is in Fall 2013.

Wayne Skaggs, a National Academy of Engineering member and retiring William Neal Reynolds and Distinguished University Professor of biological and agricultural engineering, with his wife, Judy, has created an endowment to support the continued research in his field of water, soil and plant systems management. The Wayne and Judy Skaggs Endowment for Water Resources and the Hydrology of Poorly Drained Lands was created Nov. 9 at N.C. State University’s McKimmon Center. The endowment was signed as part of festivities in commemoration of Skaggs’ career. ..."
