Rightwing reactionaries and rigid-thinking authoritarians are the problem—the term "Republican" is way too general and has changed definitions many times. Over the last few decades the GOP has become far more cultish through a deliberate weeding-out of moderates by political strategists and now attracts extremists and feeds them endless talking points of hate and fear via the "noise machine." The last time this rabid hate-mongering was so blatant in the mainstream was during The Red Scare in the 1950s which crossed party lines.
