Russia Is Seen Gaining Farmland With Climate Change

Russia, Canada and China are projected to gain farmland this century as the world warms up due to climate change, even as global crop-growing capacity may decline, a German study showed.

Climate change could add 5.6 million square kilometers (2.2 million square miles) of land for crops in the 2071-2100 period compared with 1981-2010, mainly in the Northern Hemisphere, according to researchers at Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich. Because land suitable for triple cropping may be reduced, the net effect would be a loss of 7.8 million square kilometers of land for farming, the study found.

Long-term climate change may have “potentially catastrophic” effects on growing food in the period from 2050 to 2100, the United Nations’ Food & Agriculture Organization has said. Crops are “highly sensitive” to temperatures above certain thresholds, and hotter weather may hurt yields, the World Bank wrote in a 2012 report.

“Suitable areas increase especially in the northern regions,” the researchers wrote. “Global average suitability decreased under the chosen climate scenario.”

The researchers, led by Wolfram Mauser, modeled future agricultural suitability for 16 crops including wheat, corn, potatoes and cassava, using the A1B scenario of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The scenario projects average global warming of 2.8 degrees Celsius (5 degrees Fahrenheit) by 2100.

Based on the study, Russia is set to gain 3.1 million square kilometers of land suitable for agriculture, Canada farmland would expand by 2.1 million square kilometers and China would gain 0.9 million square kilometers.

Fertile Land

“Much of the additional area is, however, at best only moderately suited to agricultural use, so the proportion of highly fertile land used for crop production will decrease,” co-author Florian Zabel was cited as saying in a statement on the university’s website.

The expansion of farmland would be mainly in sparsely populated areas, which might mean a lack of labor to open up new agricultural lands and prepare soils, the researchers wrote. Investment costs will be “high,” and it will take a long time to expand farming in those areas, they said.

The amount of land suitable for growing three crops a year would fall by 6 million square kilometers under the projected climate, according to the study. The biggest decreases in multiple-cropping areas would be in Brazil and sub-Saharan Africa, the researchers found.

“In the context of current projections, which predict that the demand for food will double by the year 2050 as the result of population increase, our results are quite alarming,” Zabel said.

The university, founded in 1472, ranked 49th in the Academic Ranking of World Universities and shared the top spot for Germany with Heidelberg University.
