Why MOOCs are Good for Teacher Professional Development

Why MOOCs are Good for Teacher Professional Development | Research | Scoop.it

"While I am not a huge fan of MOOCs (See, MOOCs – The Opium of the Masses, I think that there is one area in which they might actually be extremely useful – ongoing teacher professional development (PD). They are a good fit to help meet a very specific need, which they could do quite well given teachers’ experience with education."

I've had several teachers go through the How Things Work course through Coursera. They loved it. The feedback I received is the course was challenging it gave them resources they could immediately use in the classroom. They were also able to receive valuable professional development on their own time without missing instruction. There is nothing wrong with that!

I think there is huge potential for MOOCs but teacher professional development is certainly an area where they will be highly useful.

30 Free Teacher Professional Development Courses

30 Free Teacher Professional Development Courses | Research | Scoop.it

Earlier this week I wrote a post about places tosearch for free online courses. One resource that I neglected to mention and subsequently had many people on Google+ remind me of is Coursera. Earlier this spring Coursera announced a new category of courses, Teacher Professional Development. Currently, thirty courses are scheduled in the new Teacher PD category. The next course begins in July.

A great resource for teachers to use when trying to personalize their Professional Development choices in your school.  As part of developing a culture of PD, teachers need to have access to courses and resources that fit their needs.  These online classes are the perfect start!
