Map It! Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences in Social Studies with IHMC CmapTools

Southworth, E. M. (2017). Map It! Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences in Social Studies with IHMC CmapTools. Social Studies Education Review, 6(1), 78–92. Retrieved from http://digitalcommons.snc.edu/faculty_staff_works/3

ABSTRACT

As a free software tool, IHMC CmapTools redefines the concept mapping learning strategy with an infusion of technology to provide students with meaningful and non-rote learning experiences. The following review discusses what IHMC
CmapTools is, the literature-supported academic benefits of student-employed concept mapping, and how my secondary social studies colleague and I introduced this software to his students to create meaningful learning opportunities with social studies content. After working with IHMC CmapTools for over four years in both social studies and non-social studies classes, I would strongly encourage social studies educators in grades 5-12 to consider implementing this tool in their instruction as a means of enriching both their students’ engagement with social studies material and their students’ understanding of their own metacognitive processes.

PERSONAL COMMENT:

Interesting work that can be used to get started in using the concept maps and IHMC CmapTools.

¿Cómo se determina el qué, cómo y cuándo evaluar?

¿Cómo se determina el qué, cómo y cuándo evaluar? | Representando el conocimiento | Scoop.it

El concepto de evaluación en la educación tiende a ser confuso. En inglés existe un término diferente para la evaluación dentro de un curso: “assessment“; pero en español no tenemos tal distinción. Trataremos de aclarar un poco el término dependiendo de su aplicación.

Remember when you were in school and you had to cram hundreds of pages of textbook material into your head before every big test? If you were like most students, you and your friends probably developed all kinds of tactics to make the grade. Maybe you made flashcards, or reviewed recordings of your professors’ lectures, or came up with intricate mnemonic devices to memorize the material at hand. You may have argued with your classmates about which method was best—but the truth is that, when it comes to learning, one size does not fit all. Scientists and psychologists have developed a number of different models to understand the different ways that people learn best. One popular theory, the VARK model, identifies four primary types of learners: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Each learning type responds best to a different method of teaching. Auditory learners will remember information best after reciting it back to the presenter, while kinesthetic learners will jump at the chance to participate in a hands-on activity.

Syria's war: Who is fighting and why [Updated]

"After four-plus years of fighting, Syria's war has killed at least hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. And, though it started as a civil war, it's become much more than that. It's a proxy war that has divided much of the Middle East, and has drawn in both Russia and the United States. To understand how Syria got to this place, it helps to start at the beginning and watch it unfold."

This video is related to chapter seven "Ethnicities" because Syria's war is composed of many countries of different ethnicities fighting for different people. In my opinion, this video is very informal and helped me to understand what is actually going on in Syria.
Reagan Stiles's curator insight, April 16, 8:49 PM
This article relates to human geography because we have been discussing what causes tension and problems between ethnicities. My opinion on the video is that we need to make more statements to show we are involved in the war and that we can have justice.
Kaleigh Thompson's curator insight, April 21, 1:27 PM
This article is related to Human Geography because in class we have been discussing what causes problems between ethnic groups. In my opinion the video is that we should do more, makes more statements and show that we are involved in the war and that we also can have justice like everyone else
