| Representando el conocimiento | Scoop.it

Oskar Almazan's curator insight, September 15, 1:48 AM
At the end of the day, teaching is about learning, and learning is about understanding. And as technology evolves to empower more diverse and flexible assessments forms, constantly improving our sense of what understanding looks like–during mobile learning, during project-based learning, and in a flipped classroom–can not only improve learning outcomes, but just might be the secret to providing personalized learning for every learner.

Why we prioritize Educational Methodology, not just Educational Technology

Why we prioritize Educational Methodology, not just Educational Technology | Representando el conocimiento | Scoop.it
“Effective integration of instructional technology in learning environments is the unicorn of successful curriculum design and implementation. Yet, one can almost hear the groans during discussions on the benefits of incorporating technology into lesson plans and curricula. Often times the pitch as to what technology could facilitate for learners and educators is aspirational while the actual execution of tech in the classroom is overwhelming, finicky, and unreliable. Indeed, classroom tech setups often appear to be on par with spaceship mission control for the uninitiated.”

It seems we as educators can move beyond why we should integrate technology and start tackling the crux of the matter: how. Sending students home to watch a lesson on YouTube or burying their heads in a computer game during class time is not particularly innovative or revolutionary—it’s using tech for tech’s sake. Just because “there’s an app for that” doesn’t mean you should use it. To truly transform the logistics and outcomes of education, ed tech companies need to provide more than just the best possible tech. It’s time to focus as much on the implementation and methodology as the technology itself.

Sure, you could use a then end of a screwdriver to bash in a screw… or you could use it the way it was intended. It’ll save you time and come out a lot cleaner. The onus is on ed tech companies to make the intended use of their tools just as obvious.

Syria's war: Who is fighting and why [Updated]

"After four-plus years of fighting, Syria's war has killed at least hundreds of thousands of people and displaced millions. And, though it started as a civil war, it's become much more than that. It's a proxy war that has divided much of the Middle East, and has drawn in both Russia and the United States. To understand how Syria got to this place, it helps to start at the beginning and watch it unfold."

This article is related to Human Geography because in class we have been discussing what causes problems between ethnic groups. In my opinion the video is that we should do more, makes more statements and show that we are involved in the war and that we also can have justice like everyone else
Seth Dixon's curator insight, June 5, 12:14 PM

Over a year ago I posted a previous version of this video highlighting the complexities behind the Syrian war.  Much has happened since then and this updated version adds more detail and includes a very helpful timeline to show how more internal and external forces became involved in the fighting.  This is an incredibly complicated geopolitical situation because of all the regional and international players involved.

Far more complex couplings between SAMR and Bloom are possible, involving convergent/divergent branchings, oscillations between levels, skipping of some SAMR levels, etc. Nonetheless, the simple structure described above is well suited to beginning practitioners’ needs, and even retains usefulness for more experienced faculty.

Abstract

Visual literacy in English language teaching

Visual literacy in English language teaching | Representando el conocimiento | Scoop.it

Visual literacy is the ability to create meaning from images. It involves decoding visuals using our own cultural and personal filters. This doesn’t just apply to static images. We can apply visual literacy to films, websites and social media platforms. In this post I’ll be outlining a few ways we can unlock images and generate learner output.

Map It! Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences in Social Studies with IHMC CmapTools

Southworth, E. M. (2017). Map It! Creating Meaningful Learning Experiences in Social Studies with IHMC CmapTools. Social Studies Education Review, 6(1), 78–92. Retrieved from http://digitalcommons.snc.edu/faculty_staff_works/3

ABSTRACT

As a free software tool, IHMC CmapTools redefines the concept mapping learning strategy with an infusion of technology to provide students with meaningful and non-rote learning experiences. The following review discusses what IHMC
CmapTools is, the literature-supported academic benefits of student-employed concept mapping, and how my secondary social studies colleague and I introduced this software to his students to create meaningful learning opportunities with social studies content. After working with IHMC CmapTools for over four years in both social studies and non-social studies classes, I would strongly encourage social studies educators in grades 5-12 to consider implementing this tool in their instruction as a means of enriching both their students’ engagement with social studies material and their students’ understanding of their own metacognitive processes.

PERSONAL COMMENT:

Interesting work that can be used to get started in using the concept maps and IHMC CmapTools.
