| Representando el conocimiento | Scoop.it

Holistic knowledge ecosystems (HKEs) require a different kind of modeling expertise from that of instructional designers. The former is about faithfully modeling domains of knowledge, while the latter is about translating those domains into creative expressions intended to make learning more effective and engaging. There is a strong connection between HKEs and the 70:20:10 learning principle.

Scientists and journalists share similar skills and challenges in digital storytelling, especially when it comes to researching an unfamiliar field. Current tools for searching information from the academic world in particular can be difficult and time-consuming. PubMed and Google Scholar, for example, present searches linearly—a long list of things to sift through.

Remember when you were in school and you had to cram hundreds of pages of textbook material into your head before every big test? If you were like most students, you and your friends probably developed all kinds of tactics to make the grade. Maybe you made flashcards, or reviewed recordings of your professors’ lectures, or came up with intricate mnemonic devices to memorize the material at hand. You may have argued with your classmates about which method was best—but the truth is that, when it comes to learning, one size does not fit all. Scientists and psychologists have developed a number of different models to understand the different ways that people learn best. One popular theory, the VARK model, identifies four primary types of learners: visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. Each learning type responds best to a different method of teaching. Auditory learners will remember information best after reciting it back to the presenter, while kinesthetic learners will jump at the chance to participate in a hands-on activity.

Using infographic creation tools in the classroom

Using infographic creation tools in the classroom | Representando el conocimiento | Scoop.it
The next time you need to evaluate what students have learned about a subject, ask them to create an infographic. When students take the information they have learned and compile it into a visual format, it demonstrates mastery of the content. Infographics stimulate visual learning. Encouraging students to create and share their infographics in the classroom takes their learning to the next level. Teachers need to provide students with infographic creation tools that provide students with a way to create infographics easily, to allow them to focus on the content rather than mastering a new technology.

When evaluating infographic tools teachers should look for tools that are easy to use but are also rich with functionality. These tools should also make it easy to print and share the infographics that students create. Infographic tools that allow students to compile their data into visually interesting charts and graphs are also a plus. Here are a few tools that we have evaluated that offer these important features.

When we encourage students to create graphic organizers we are .taking into accout the different learning styles they have. In this case, they can explore and organize their ideas in an appealing way. Furthermore, creating infographics is excellent for understanding content because by using them, students can extract the main ideas from diverse topics.
Definitely, I will incorporate tools like this, for giving freedom to students' imagination and creativity.
