Deux groupes scientifiques nippons ont réussi à envoyer vers une cible plusieurs kilowatts d'électricité via des micro-ondes. Cet exploit pourrait permettre de produire notre énergie depuis l'espace. Explications.L'Agence japonaise d'exploration spatiale (Jaxa), mais aussi le groupe nippon Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) annoncent à quelques jours d'intervalle avoir réussi une expérimentation de transmission d'électricité sans fil, une technologie qui pourrait servir sur Terre et dans l'espace.

Le conglomérat a indiqué être parvenu à faire passer une puissance de 10 kilowatts sur une distance de 500 mètres en exploitant la conversion d'électricité en flux énergétique transmis par micro-ondes. Le succès de l'opération a été confirmé par l'illumination de diodes électroluminescentes (Led) en bout de course.

Cette expérimentation de MHI, menée à Kobe, suit de près un test assez similaire réalisé par la Jaxa avec une puissance de près de 2 kilowatts transmise sur une distance de 55 mètres, là encore en utilisant des micro-ondes et un dispositif de contrôle de la directivité.

Puiser directement l'énergie solaire dans l'espace

"La technologie de transmission de puissance sans fil vise à éliminer les connexions classiquement nécessaires pour véhiculer de l'électricité, et les résultats des tests réussis ouvrent la voie à l'utilisation de cette technologie dans de nombreux domaines", souligne MHI dans un communiqué. Il espère des applications concrètes dans cinq ans et songe notamment à une telle solution lorsque des infrastructures ont été détruites par une catastrophe naturelle, ou bien quand il s'agit de transporter du courant depuis des éoliennes installées en mer.

L'autre grand domaine d'application est l'espace, d'où l'implication de la Jaxa. En effet, Le Japon rêve depuis les années 1980 de produire de l'électricité au niveau interstellaire et de l'envoyer ensuite vers la Terre, s'affranchissant ainsi d'une météo capricieuse et des cycles jour/nuit qui empêche d'exploiter à plein l'énergie du Soleil. Un ambitieux projet a été lancé en 2009, après des recherches débutées en 1998. Néanmoins, "Il faudra des décennies avant que nous puissions passer à une utilisation pratique de cette technologie dans l'espace, peut-être dans les années 2040 ou plus tard", a cependant tempéré jeudi un porte-parole de la Jaxa.
