SOUTH AFRICA: Meeting the demands of an emerging economy in an increasingly carbon constrained world

SOUTH AFRICA: Meeting the demands of an emerging economy in an increasingly carbon constrained world | AREA News Digest | Scoop.it

As an emerging economy in the throes of an energy crisis, South Africa is facing critical energy policy choices. South Africa is reliant on electricity to deliver the growth it needs to help uplift the large portion of its population still living in poverty. It is however one of the highest carbon emitting countries in the world, largely as a result of its reliance on old coal fired power plants. South Africa is the 11th highest polluting country in terms of carbon emissions and only the 32nd most productive economy in terms of GDP. The need to accommodate both growth and job creation in an increasingly carbon constrained world gives the impact investor a unique profit opportunity.
