MODIS : Fires in Indochina | Remote Sensing News | Scoop.it

As the 2012 agricultural fire season progressed in Indochina, smoke blanketed the region and aerosol particulates increased to potentially unhealthy levels. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard the Aqua satellite captured this true-color image of the vast amount of smoke and haze hovering over the region on February 23, 2012.

WORLD FROM SPACE Rhodes ~ IWO - Irish Weather Online | Remote Sensing News | Scoop.it

Rhodes is the biggest island in the Greek Dodecanese chain in the southeastern Aegean Sea. Rhodes (also known as Rodos) stretches roughly 77 kilometers (48 miles) from northeast to southwest.

Its highest point, Mount Attavyros reaches 1,200 meters (3,900 feet) above sea level. A variety of vegetation thrives on the rugged island and migratory birds use it as a resting place. Humans have lived here since the Stone Age.

Support Vector Machine for image classification

Support Vector Machine for image classification | Remote Sensing News | Scoop.it

Support Vector Machine (SVM) is an implementation of the latest generation of machine learning algorithms based on recent advances in statistical learning. These supervised methods are used for classification and regression. SVM is one of the classifiers that I’m going to use in my project to predict if a image has a close-up view of an anchor.
In simple words, given a set of training examples, each marked as belonging to one of two categories, an SVM training algorithm builds a model that predicts whether a new example falls into one category or the other. Intuitively, an SVM model is a representation of the examples as points in space although in this specific example there are images, mapped so that the examples of the separate categories are divided by a clear gap that is as wide as possible. New images are then mapped into that same space and predicted to belong to a category based on which side of the gap they fall on.

Here's the Site Iran Doesn't Want Inspectors to See | Remote Sensing News | Scoop.it

Iran can banish U.N. inspectors from its military sites but it can't obstruct the prying eyes of commercial satellites.

On Tuesday, officials from the International Atomic Energy Agency left Iran in a huff after the country refused to grant permission to inspect a military site in Parchin where a facility suspected of testing explosives exists. In light of Iran's coyness about its facilities, we asked Mark Bender, executive director of the commercial satellite imagery company GeoEye Foundation, for a closer look.

February 22, 2012 - Flooding in Southeastern Australia

February 22, 2012 - Flooding in Southeastern Australia | Remote Sensing News | Scoop.it
Along the border between the Australian states of Queensland and New South Wales, several communities were flooded in early February 2012. By mid-month, the flood waters had moved west. On February 19, online news source NineMSN reported that as many as 10,000 residents of northeastern New South Wales would likely be isolated from the outside world by high water.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Terra satellite acquired the top image on February 18, 2012. Scrolling over that image will reveal the same area acquired on February 6, 2012. Both images show flood conditions, but they also show the movement of water along the Barwon and Namoi Rivers and other waterways in the region. Queensland is in the north and New South Wales in the south. The Barwon River can be seen near the lower center edge. Namoi lies to the east of the Barwon.
