Self-directed learning allows students to construct their own knowledge, which is a form of authentic instruction. By allowing students to use technology that is relevant to them, it fosters independence in students. This new independence can create an environment where struggling or reluctant learners can flourish and thrive. Many students are already using technology like Twitter, Skype, Facebook, Youtube outside of school. This makes their learning more relevant and more likely to be retained.
