Biography: Muhammad: Turning the World Upside Down

Biography: Muhammad: Turning the World Upside Down | Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it

The prophet Muhammad is the central figure in Islam, which purports to be the fastest-growing religion in the world. Muslims see him as the ideal man, a rare example of perfect submission to God. His practice, or sunna (the way he acted, which is to be emulated by Muslims), is second in authority only to the Qur’an. Muhammad’s followers believe he lived a sinless life, and that everything he did was the perfect embodiment of the will of God.

Of what value is the book of Revelation? Does it foretell the cataclysmic end of the world? Is it a historical record of events long past, or perhaps a call to moral responsibility? Or should it be read merely as first-century literature aimed at a first-century audience?

(From the article): Most religions teach that after death, a soul within us leaves the body and lives on for eternity. Many people assume it is also a biblical belief, but is it? What exactly is the history of this idea?

Most people also accept the idea that early followers withstood as much competition and opposition from internal as from external sources, but how accurate is that notion?

Insight: Truth or Tradition?

It's long been known that Jesus was not born in 1 AD, nor was he born on December 25th. Tradition has had a major influence on many religious practices. But is tradition a reliable guide to truth?

Insight: A Vision for the New Middle East? | Religion and Spirituality | Scoop.it
Bill Butler's insight:

Outbound by air from Israel to destinations in Central and Northern Europe, travelers overfly in the first hour or so most of the area where the apostle Paul made numerous journeys. Two thousand years ago it would have taken him and his companions weeks, if not months, to cover the same distance on foot and by sea.

Bill Butler's insight:

It was fine for George Harrison of the Beatles to visit an Indian guru in the 1960s to learn how to meditate. And it’s okay if you inhabit a hilltop monastery in Tibet. But for most of us in “the real world,” meditation seems of little practical value.

donhornsby's curator insight, January 3, 2013 8:38 AM

(From the article): The absence of men in churches is not a new phenomenon, nor is it confined to a few English-speaking nations. The trend has been commonly observed and accepted as unremarkable throughout the Western world. But why? Are men just less “religious” than women? Less easily persuaded? More logically minded and therefore less easily convinced?
