The 7 Literacies of Transmedia Storytelling | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

In today’s literacy-rich world, I identified 7 different literacies that you’ll find within good transmedia storytelling projects.

Vivalist's insight:

I don't know if I support the "gender literacy gap" theory, because I don't have any hard facts on it. But examples are good and the 7 points are broad, but interesting.

Haptix: Multitouch Reinvented

Haptix: Multitouch Reinvented | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it
Haptix turns any surface into a multitouch surface. Take interaction to the next level by tapping, pinching, or swiping on any surface instead.
Vivalist's insight:

Looks like a pretty robust tech - even though I'm still not convinced about all the "physical" ways to interact that do not imply a "real" touch input... I lack the trust in their robustness and their lack of "friction feedback" as I could call it... the feel of something happening.

Can a toy robot teach kids computer programming?

Can a toy robot teach kids computer programming? | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

The team at Play-i decided to avoid abstract concepts and the traditional focus on written code and syntax that are the core elements of most common programming languages today. Instead, they made it fun - kid's fun.

Vivalist's insight:

Reminds me of Cubelets in a more cute / approachable form

http://www.geeknewscentral.com/2013/02/18/modular-robotics-cubelets-robotic-construction-kits/

The guy was head of consumer payments division for Google, so it was a smart move to go on with his life :) There is no such things as "consumer payments" at Google :)

Great initiative anyway. Kids should at least give programming a try... in a fun way. It is very fullfilling and there is a lot of pride one can get from it.

Field of streams: how Twitch made video games a spectator sport

Field of streams: how Twitch made video games a spectator sport | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

"Twitch has given tournament promoters the ability to cheaply and easily push live streams to millions of viewers with minimal lag. On the consumer side, it’s now possible for anyone with a PC to get in on the action. On average, more than 600,000 different players broadcast several millions hours of gameplay on Twitch each month. And the number of potential streamers is about to get much bigger. "With Twitch being integrated into the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, anyone, even with no technical sophistication, can be playing a game, and with the press of a button, be broadcasting their action live"

Vivalist's insight:

Twitch TV has been the tool allowing eSports and Video Game broadcasting to truly blossom. Now I wish that the "share" features of next gen consoles allows video game broadcasting to expand beyond eSports competition-fueled vibe and into new narrative realm - powered by gamers.

Should Filmmakers Learn to Code? - Filmmaker Magazine

Should Filmmakers Learn to Code? - Filmmaker Magazine | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

At MIT’s Comparative Media Studies, where the MIT Open Documentary Lab is housed, we are confronted with this question on a regular basis as humanists sitting in a land of hackers who marvel at the power and elegance of code.[...] As more storytellers consider migrating to the web and other digital platforms, the relationship between filmmaking and programming becomes more pressing.

Vivalist's insight:

Fantastic series introduced by this article and followed by interview with "leading practitioners. Not only do we learn how people work with technologists but that, in some cases, technical expertise is not even necessary. Our initial question about programming emerged into a larger dialogue about the nature of digital storytelling."

What Games Are: The Future Of Pervasive Games | TechCrunch

What Games Are: The Future Of Pervasive Games | TechCrunch | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

Pervasive gaming is a well-worn idea that’s drifted through the pages of design theory for at least 20 years. It’s the idea of a game that goes beyond the bounds of one screen.

With the ever growing acceptance of smart phone and other powerful mobile devices, it is likely to become a reality soon... or is it?

Vivalist's insight:

The "perception issue" point at the end sums it up. Persavise gaming is a nice idea, but it is not only a path full of technological obstacles, the main one is that most people are simply NOT going to buy it...

So developing huge game universes for a happy few is not going to be very commin in a near future.
