Update: Changes To VODs On Twitch - The Official Twitch Blog

"In order to create a system that supports live and VOD across the globe and on multiple platforms, we need to make significant changes to the way we’re currently storing video. Today, we’d like to discuss what these changes are, why they’re necessary, and how they benefit the entire Twitch community now and in the future."

Vivalist's insight:

First batch of changes to Twitch following the Google move.

It's mostly an improvement on VOD storage... but for those who read between the lines, there is more to it... the end of innocence?

Looks like YT's audio recognition system is hard at work castrating streamers' creativity on Twitch. Good that VG publishers already chose the gamers' side on that copyright topic from the past...

ESPN was so pleased with the success of its recent broadcast of the Dota 2 tounament The International, the renowned broadcaster is looking to expand its esports coverage, according to a source close to ESPN.

Vivalist's insight:

And that's how eSports became a sport - through sport TV network recognition :) That's a valid standard to define "sport" I guess: an activity that goes on TV and which rules are then bent to fit some commercial breaks in there ;)

Making games more cheaply by Raph Koster

There are basically two big things that drive a lack of innovation in games. The first of them is risk minimization. The second of them is risk minimization.

Vivalist's insight:

2 years old - still valid as "how to make games in this day and age". Yes it could eventually turn out to be cheaper, but that's not the only benefit.

Promote emergent gameplays is not [only] about the money for example :)

Comic-Con: James Frey to Introduce 'Endgame' Universe With Panel, Puzzle, Interactive Game

Comic-Con: James Frey to Introduce 'Endgame' Universe With Panel, Puzzle, Interactive Game | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

Endgame is James Frey's upcoming book, but to call it only a book would be vastly oversimplifying things.
While the first novel will hit stores Oct. 7, Frey's project is made up of the books (a planned trilogy), e-books, a puzzle, a game, a treasure hunt and an upcoming movie.

Vivalist's insight:

Backed by Google's Niantic Labs, HarperCollins & FOX - a spontaneous cross-media universe creation.

"Endgame was always conceived of and designed and created to be this pretty vast universe," says Frey. "The idea was that we would build everything before it came out. We'd be proactive in creating the universe instead of reactive."

Major undertaking.

I’m a writer, and don’t get me wrong: To publish a plain ol’ book that people actually want to read is still a solid achievement. But I think Markus Persson and his studio have staked out a new kind of achievement, a deeper kind: To make the system that calls forth the book, which is not just a story but a real magick manual that grants its reader (who consumes it avidly, endlessly, all day, at school, at night, under the covers, studying, studying) new and exciting powers in a vivid, malleable world.

Rarely does a lesson become more about “ThingLink” than the topic about which students are trying to express their knowledge.

There's A Concert On Twitch, And The Comments Are Bonkers

Taking a little break from letting people play video games in front of other people, streaming site Twitch is tonight hosting a concert by Steve Aoki. The comments, as anyone who's ever used Twitch can probably guess, are hilarious.
Vivalist's insight:

I knew it! It was only a matter of time before people start to realize that what makes Twitch (and its streaming tech) fantastic has nothing to do with Video Gaming.

It is the TV of the 21st century and that's why YouTube bought it, not for 44million users who already are on YT anyway. That's the way you'll watch TV in 2 years from now. Live from anywhere by anyone.

Grumpy Gamer - Maniac Mansion Design Doc

Grumpy Gamer - Maniac Mansion Design Doc | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

"If this document (and the Monkey Island Design Notes) say anything, it's how much ideas change from initial concept to finished game. And that's a good thing. Never be afraid to change your ideas. Refine and edit. If your finished game looks just like your initial idea, then you haven't pushed and challenged yourself hard enough.

It's all part of the creative process. Creativity is a messy process. It wants to be messy and it needs to be messy."
