Disruption guru Clay Christensen says incumbent media players are making a classic mistake

Disruption guru Clay Christensen says incumbent media players are making a classic mistake | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it
Existing players in an industry almost always fail to appreciate how disruption will affect them or understand how to adapt to it, Harvard professor Clay Christensen says, and media companies are making all of those same mistakes.
Vivalist's insight:

It's weird to stumble upon that article right after reading the result of the game developers survey at this year's GDC

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/187292/GDC_State_of_the_Industry_research_reveals_key_trends.php#.UTBu2DBjt8F

The Gaming Industry is undergoing major changes. It always evolved, but with the annoucement of PS4, the fail of the WiiU and the rise of tablets, smartphones and other Steam Box, Gree & Ouya's, it's not an evolution, it's a revolution coming our way!

We'll see how the big publishers react to that paradigm shift.

Making games more cheaply by Raph Koster

There are basically two big things that drive a lack of innovation in games. The first of them is risk minimization. The second of them is risk minimization.

Vivalist's insight:

2 years old - still valid as "how to make games in this day and age". Yes it could eventually turn out to be cheaper, but that's not the only benefit.

Promote emergent gameplays is not [only] about the money for example :)

Comic-Con: James Frey to Introduce 'Endgame' Universe With Panel, Puzzle, Interactive Game

Comic-Con: James Frey to Introduce 'Endgame' Universe With Panel, Puzzle, Interactive Game | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

Endgame is James Frey's upcoming book, but to call it only a book would be vastly oversimplifying things.
While the first novel will hit stores Oct. 7, Frey's project is made up of the books (a planned trilogy), e-books, a puzzle, a game, a treasure hunt and an upcoming movie.

Vivalist's insight:

Backed by Google's Niantic Labs, HarperCollins & FOX - a spontaneous cross-media universe creation.

"Endgame was always conceived of and designed and created to be this pretty vast universe," says Frey. "The idea was that we would build everything before it came out. We'd be proactive in creating the universe instead of reactive."

Major undertaking.

The secret of Minecraft — The Message — | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

I’m a writer, and don’t get me wrong: To publish a plain ol’ book that people actually want to read is still a solid achievement. But I think Markus Persson and his studio have staked out a new kind of achievement, a deeper kind: To make the system that calls forth the book, which is not just a story but a real magick manual that grants its reader (who consumes it avidly, endlessly, all day, at school, at night, under the covers, studying, studying) new and exciting powers in a vivid, malleable world.

SYDNEY - Working with Google Play, M&C Saatchi Sydney has released a music video in an intriguing online format that invites the user to experience a story through the six facets of a cube.
Vivalist's insight:

playing with the cubes facets alters the mix - which makes sense with electronic tracks I guess. Good design. The videos are too VJ-like for me... just here to fill the space, no true meaning.

Grumpy Gamer - Maniac Mansion Design Doc

Grumpy Gamer - Maniac Mansion Design Doc | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it

"If this document (and the Monkey Island Design Notes) say anything, it's how much ideas change from initial concept to finished game. And that's a good thing. Never be afraid to change your ideas. Refine and edit. If your finished game looks just like your initial idea, then you haven't pushed and challenged yourself hard enough.

It's all part of the creative process. Creativity is a messy process. It wants to be messy and it needs to be messy."

Interview: Why CANAL+ Spain took Game of Thrones transmedia | relevant entertainment | Scoop.it
Discover how the pay TV channel engaged Game of Thrones fans beyond TV with crossmedia platform Conducttr
Vivalist's insight:

"Conducttr technology allows CANAL+ to connect and reward fan activity online, offline and on social media so we’re able to create a truly immersive cross-platform experience that allows the fans to believe Westeros really has come to Spain.

[...] In the first half of the season fans also had to physically go into FNAC stores to collect gold, silver and bronze in order to build wealth to buy in-game inventory. In the second half of the season fans can draw a salary from the 19 Reinos website.

Because the game is a full-on RPG which might be a little complex for some fans unfamiliar with this genre, we created our own character, Edwyck, who appears in a five-episode web series explaining the rules and there is a beautifully illustrated downloadable strategy guide."
