While Telltale’s video game adaptation of The Walking Dead focuses on the pathos and pain stemming from making impossible post-apocalyptic decisions, The Walking Dead: Assault from Skybound (the same company that publishes the comics) focuses on that other side of The Walking Dead: zombie blasting!
The 11 missions loosely retell the events from the comic book’s first few issues, from Rick waking up in the hospital to the overrun of the group’s backwoods camp. But there is no slavish dedication to canon. For gameplay purposes players can take any unlocked party member into any mission, so don’t be too offended at Glenn blasting away at Rick’s side in the hospital.
Assault’s overall style and elaborate collection of extras more than make up for the missions playing fast and loose with Walking Dead lore, however.
The game employs an incredibly effective black and white comic book style that truly does look like printed Walking Dead pages come to life. The grayscale environments are punctuated with red blood splatters and yellow pick-ups. Even these bits of color are stylized to look like comic book ink. The artwork is the star of The Walking Dead: Assault.
