In my Geography 400 class at Rhode island College, My professor introduced us to the topic of Europe. In the topic of Europe we learned about Catalonia and their struggle for greater autonomy/freedom from Spain. We learned that this internal conflict bewteen Spain and the Catalonians gathered an international awareness during the 1992 Olympic games in Barcelona. After our lesson on this topic I was greatly interested in places that wished for greater control in their region. These places have included Catalonia, Basque country, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and other well known regions in the world. My purpose with this scoop.it page is to illustrate these various regions that have cultural, historical, political, and lingustic differences from the place they currently call their State.

For Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu apartheid, or institutionalized segregation of Palestinians, is less threatening than full-fledged Palestinian independence.

 

 

This ongoing topic of Israeli and Palestinian fighting has been a heated topic. The fact of the matter is, palestinians want greater autonomy and freedom. therefore they qualify into this section of people that want independence from the region they reside in. In this article I feel that both sides are on the opposite sides of ideas. israeli as demonstrated by this article do not want the idea of a free independent state of palestine, it scares them. On the other hand the palestinian people desperatly want to be free.

Sunday's regional elections in Catalonia threw new obstacles into its path for independence from Spain. The independence-minded Basque Country hopes to adopt Catalonia's lessons.

 

The way Catalonia has gone about its way for independance is a example for another region inside of Spain, the Basque country. The people of basque much like Catalonians have their own history, language, as well as customs. They two have been trying to pass referendums that will enable them succecced from the Spanish state and form their own Country. The next move for basque largely depends on what Catalonia does and how Madrid responds.

The use of sports have always been a source of entertainment and they have also represented political problems of the day. This soccer team Barcelona is a staple of Catalan language, culture, as well as beliefs. The Spanish want to establish Castallian Spoken Spainish in all school and teach nothing else. This profoundly upsets the Catalonia soccer players that they use their postion in the world to alert people of their plight agaisnt Spanish cultural supression.

Learn about the history of the conflict in Nothern Ireland and important dates and people involved in it.

 

 

This conflict over Northern Ireland is another issue that illustrate a region of the opposite effect of what Catalonia wants to do. Ireland wants to be a unified Country instead of two separte nations. This case of Northern Ireland is different than other regions in the fact that they don't want to be two different places anymore and this has caused massive amounts of fighting over the last century.

CNN - Quebec vote is 'a wake up call' - Oct. 31, 1995

This article demonstrates Quebec's voters  desire for an independant French Quebec. By a slim margin of 50,000 votes, Quebec remains a part of Canada and as the title of this article states how this was a wake up call for all of Canada. Due to the slim margin of staying unified this was a politcians nightmare after this vote. There are a lot of things that still need to be done to ensure Canada staying united as one.

Louisiana and Texas secession petition qualify for White House response while petitions to strip citizenship of individuals signing onto petitions to break away have also been submitted.

 

This something closer to home, unhappy Americans have been fed up with this current adminstation and have posted a petition of secession from the Union. Many states cite the Declaration of Independence and the economy as their reason to leave the union. Now although it is not a large signifcant number of people that want to leave, the thought is out there. It is something to consider and take seriously because what if people in certain states decide they want to be independent, we'd have Countries within a Country. Residents in over forty states want to sucede, thats a lot of states and people something the White House should try to provide a solution for.

My desire to learn more about places that have developed Seperatist movements and their desire for freedom have culminated in this topic. I have included the most notable places like Northern Ireland, Catalonia, Palestine, and even Tibet are among the places I have scooped to show regional differences and how people do not like being controlled by someone of different beliefs and backgrounds. I firmly enjoyed my topic of Regional Independence and i have probably missed some places in the process but I hope that this page has enough material to educate others like myself and amaze them about the trials some people are still going for in the search of freedom. Please feel free to comment and respond to any of my post and let me know what you think.

Would you like to read YOUR Declaration of Independance ?

   

"When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation"

 

This quote from our Declaration of Independance gave us the chance to throw off British rule and establish an American Country. This same passage could be used and applied to illustrate other places like Catalonia in Spain, Northern Ireland, Palestine, and other regions that seek greater autonomy and independance for themselves.

In the end who would have thought that after World War II that Europe would ever have border disputes and secession talks. Now especially after the Cold War who thought there would be conflict in one's own Country for more self determination. George Friedman illustrates what Gaza, Catalonia and Romantic Nationlism could effect Europe in the future. Now the main theme I found from this article is how it was once belielved Europe would no longer fight amongst themselves, however that now seems not as far fetched as it once did all those years ago.

The tourism board bills them as "a European Mediterranean country," distinctly separate from Spanish cultural identity.  Implied also is a political distinction as well with their NATIONAL history museum (select language to view in English).  

 

 

"This is an example of how one group of people within a larger entity itself find themselves to be different. For example the region, and people of Catalonia belielve they are not spanish and they prove this with their own distinct muesum, politics, language, and own sports team. When things like this occur and the people want to be their own country I say they should be able to succedd and become one."

Catalonia is not Spain. A region that can draw tourism on its own merits that is distinctly Catalonian and not Spanish. These people have strong cultural ties to Catalonia that makes it distinguishable from Spain.

This article provides a look into the steps needed for independance and the fears of being independant for both Scotland and Catalonia. Possible concerns for both regions would be to lose their EU membership and other economic benefits that they currently have with their host Countries.

This is a prime example of one area that has had problems in the past about being under rule of another area. South Tyrol is a proftiable region within Italy that has peacefully coexisted with larger Italy. This is an example of regions that have disparitiies geting along.

Here is another region in the world that has its own unique culture, religion, and political sysem. Tibet is known for their spiritual leader the Dali lama and it is a tourist destination. Now the Chinese government is trying to suppress their autonomy and take controll away from Tibetans. This article provides another example of a region that wants to be free but is struggling to keep or make itself independant.

The recent election was more about ousting the tired and corruption-tainted Liberal Party than about independence.

 

 

Canada another place that desires greater autonomy. Quebec is another region in the world that has differences in language, and history. This article provides another example of a region searching for a greater voice in their country. After a falied attempt at Separating 17 years ago the separatist party has now decided for more involved role in their country's government. In this sense they are trying to achieve more autonomy like Scotland and Catalonia.

Millions of American citizens on the island have spoken. Now, Washington must act.


The issues and questions facing Puerto Rico are numerous and curious to say the least. Are they a Colony? They a independant nation? Or should they be a State? There relationship to America has been intertinwed throughout history and politics and the people themselves. So the question is, what should we do with Puerto Rico? Another example of certain Americans that desire more autonomy and a deffintive role with the United States. As I've asked, the issues regarding Puerto Rico need to be resolved before the people their become agitated and influenced by another power.

The author of this article provided a unique insight about what it meant to be from Puerto Rico when she recalled her memory from her fourth grade class. People clearly recognize themselves as Puerto Rican and not American although the President is considered their head of state.  It is understandable why national identity would be be confusing.

I found the article very interesting.  It makes sense that the Republican party would not want 4 million Hispanic voters.  It is interesting that the island is "colonial" in nature.  I guess in a way it is being kept like that.  I don't see the US giving it up or "selling" it as the 4th grader suggested because of pure vanity.  The island would have to sink for the US to give it up.

The recent plebiscite on the future of Puerto Ricos political status  was extremely flawed. The current commonwealth option was not listed on the ballot. Many people left that portion of their ballot blank. The 61 percent of people who voted for statehood, is more likely closer to 45 percent. It is sad that a clear and decisive  election could not have been held. Puerto Rico deserves to have its problematic political status resolved. While I personally  favor statehood, Congress has made the right decision when it comes to ignoring these results.
