Bolivia’s storied mountain of silver has created great wealth, but not for those who still mine it by hand.


DE: Thousands of Bolivians mine this silver by hand each day, and reap little of its benefits. Miners endure grueling temperatures and grueling labor as they mine for hours and hours each day risking their lives. Rich owners of industry reap the fruits of their labor while these men mine the Swiss cheese-like mines that are in an ever growing danger of collapsing. It started almost 500 years ago with natives working as slaves, and it remains the same to this day.
