The Empire That Was Russia

The Empire That Was Russia | Regional Geography |

"Prokudin-Gorskii captured the diversity throughout the empire in his travels. The Russia of Nicholas II on the eve of World War I was a land of striking ethnic diversity."

SR: Russia is a place of surprising ethic diversity.  It would be mostly dependent on where it is in Russia, but it is very different from impressions that I had of it.

Color pictures from the early 1900's never fail to amaze me. One particular collection I enjoy is a grouping of color pictures from World War 1, but these pictures of Russia are equally impressive. Seeing the past in color is extremely helpful towards understanding what the world looked like. For some people it's even powerful to see that the trees and colors of the world are the same! Not only are these photos in color, but they show a very diverse  Russia in stark comparison to the Russia many of us believe to exist.
