Comment: why councils face reorganisation no matter 2014 vote result

TO date, public debate on whether we have independence (or not) has centred on what relations might be created with a variety of international bodies, ranging from the other countries of the British Isles to the United Nations and the legacy institutions of the UK such as the Crown and the DVLA, writes RICHARD KERLEY.

The implications of independence

Supporters of Scottish independence have relied on the strategy of portraying secession as something wholly advantageous and with no negative consequences. Nationalists know that there are lots of things that the Scottish people like about being in the UK.

Peter A Bell's insight:

A fascinating glimpse of the world as viewed through the distorting lens of rabid British nationalism.

Wings Over Scotland | Remedial arithmetic for Unionists

The reliably toxic Simon Johnson in the Telegraph this morning:

“Blair Jenkins, the campaign’s chief executive, published [Yes To A Just Scotland] hours after suffering an embarrassing defeat in a mock referendum at Glasgow University, where students rejected independence by a margin of two to one.”

Actual result of referendum: 62-38, a margin of 1.6/1.

Size of Mr Johnson’s casual exaggeration: 25%. (1.6 x 1.25 = 2)

But seriously, though – what is it about believing in the Union that apparently renders educated people suddenly unable to count? We have no idea, but it may go some way to explaining the UK’s credit-rating downgrade.

Catherine Shabo's curator insight, February 24, 2013 8:11 PM

I have to say if I had a vote in this referendum, I would go with yes. I cannot think of any reasons as to why Scotland should not be an equal part in the European Union. Scotland is a good ally to the rest of the countries in Europe. The European Union is of no threat to the United States, so I see no reason to be against it. However, maybe other countries in the European Union would feel threatened by Scotland with this going on. The way this article is written, it seems as though the referendum with get a yes.

We must admit, the “Red Paper Collective” – dragged up for a quote today by the Herald’s Magnus Gardham – was a new entity on us. A quick Google reveals that they seem to be a Labour Party offshoot, a fact Gardham unaccountably neglected to mention in his piece describing them merely as “trade union activists”.

Darling says SNP misled public over currency | Herald Scotland

ALISTAIR Darling, the leader of the pro-UK Better Together campaign, has accused the SNP of "misleading the public" by claiming an independent Scotland would definitely keep the pound.

Peter A Bell's insight:

The unionist media would actually serve the British nationalist cause better if it refrained from reporting the stupid things Alistair Darling says. I'm quite sure even those of us who aren't Bitter Together "big hitters" realise that the SNP is a political party. We know that this means they offer policies, not guarantees. They can only say what they would do if they were in power.

What is lacking in Alistair Darling that he fails to grasp this simple point?

The rest is just the usual grindingly tedious and totally pointless anti-independence disinformation, dishonesty and doom-mongering with no basis in fact or reason. The important thing is that independence gives the people of Scotland choices. As Darling's Tory allies wreak economic havoc and the UK's credit rating goes down the pan, we need to be able to choose a better way.

Yes Scotland tax pledge in bid to win over trade unions

INDEPENDENCE would allow Scotland to deliver trade union demands for a more redistributive tax system and stronger employment rights, the head of Yes Scotland has claimed.

Peter A Bell's insight:

We might reasonably suppose that someone styling themselves "Political Editor" of even a "regional" newspaper such as The Herald would be able to differentiate between a political party and a campaign group. Not for the first time, Magnus Gardham is found wanting.
