Scottish independence: Boris wants ‘No’ positivity | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
LONDON mayor Boris Johnson has warned that those campaigning to keep the UK together should stop being negative, and revealed that his car bears a bumper sticker reading “I heart Scotland”.
Peter A Bell's insight:

The really sad thing is that Boris genuinely believes his bumper sticker constitutes an argument for the union.

Cameron talks up Scottish jobs and UK's economy of opportunity in Glasgow visit

THE United Kingdom creates an
Peter A Bell's insight:

Cameron comes to Scotland, not to address the people of our nation, but to talk to his big business cronies. And what does he have to say? A rehashing of the puerile mantra that bigger is always and inevitably better. (Except when it comes to the EU, of course.) Never mind the quality, he says, just look at the size. Never mind how effective and efficient it is, look at how big it is.

No doubt Cameron's audience at the exclusive CBI bash will clap like circus seals at all of this. The rest of us will see it only as yet more evidence of how vacuous and vapid the No campaign is.

Is there anything more to Cameron's words than the evident wind and pish? Perhaps. Listen carefully and you will hear that other ubiquitous component of the campaign to deny the Sovereignty of Scotland's people - the threat.

Cameron talks of the Union meaning "no borders, no transaction costs, no restrictions on the flow of goods, investment or people". But there is no reason whatever why independence itself should imply an end to any of this. Indeed, the Scottish Government is actively trying to maintain those arrangements which work well for both Scotland and England. So, when Cameron states that a Yes vote would put all of this in jeopardy he can only be suggesting that the UK/rUK Government would act to end these mutually advantageous arrangements.

To put it bluntly, Cameron is repeating the thinly veiled threat of low-level economic warfare should Scotland choose to restore its rightful constitutional status. The Scottish Government has no desire to close the border. So if there is a threat of the border being closed that threat can only come from the British state.

The Scottish Government is planning on a currency arrangement which will preclude transaction costs. So, when Cameron says that there will be transaction costs he can only mean that these will be imposed by the government in London.

Nobody in Scotland wants restrictions on the flow of goods, investment and people. The only ones talking about such things are unionists.

Is it just talk? Is it merely overblown campaign rhetoric born of frustration and desperation? Probably. But even if it is, we have to ask ourselves how it can possibly be in Scotland's interests to be in a political union which gives unearned, unwarranted and undemocratic power to politicians who consider it acceptable to threaten Scotland in this way.

Lallands Peat Worrier: Better Together's European boomerang

Lallands Peat Worrier: Better Together's European boomerang | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
The line looked initially promising: would, could an independent Scotland get into the European Union? Would we find ourselves, shivering alone on the north Atlantic frontier, our nationals shipped back from France and Spain and the Netherlands, in exchange for boatloads of Germans and Belgians, as our free movement rights are extinguished with the Union? Would Scottish businesses, buying and selling in Europe find their profits squeezed by new tariffs and trading barriers, banished beyond the common market?
