Like a whirlpool, it never ends | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

We haven’t done a “We said, he said” argument transcript for months and months, because as a rule they’re of extremely limited interest to anyone outside the political nerdosphere who isn’t familiar with the people involved.

Witterings of a Weegiewarbler: The Death of the NHS (Scotland)

It’s interesting how the Unionist Parties, all of them, say that the fate of the NHS in Scotland is ‘devolved’, that therefore it becomes wholly the choice of the Scottish Parliament to privatise, or not to privatise, all the while claiming that NHS spending in England is increasing, so our ‘Barnett Equivalent’ is increasing.

I have a confession to make - I am not enjoying covering the Scottish referendum | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
I have a confession this morning, which is that I am not enjoying covering the Scottish referendum. I should be. All journalists live for the chance to report on great events and they don’t come more momentous than the potential break-up of the UK.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Another London-based hack who has totally failed to engage with the real Yes campaign and sees the entire referendum through the distorting lens of the British media.

Shetland has been blessed with good fortune for the past 40 years.

Thanks to the efforts of our far-sighted MP Jo Grimond in the 1970s, we were granted an Act of Parliament that paved the way for the SIC to negotiate a landmark deal with the oil industry.

Cameron, Clegg, Miliband: here's the pledge of extra powers if you vote No

Cameron, Clegg, Miliband: here's the pledge of extra powers if you vote No | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
The leaders of the three main parties at Westminster have signed a pledge for more powers for Scotland if it rejects independence.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Didn't they already try this gimmick? Wasn't there a big media splash about this same meaningless political theatre only a week ago? Few people were impressed then. Fewer still will pay any attention now.

And why should we? These are the same people/parties who until recently were insisting that Scotland neither needed no deserved "more powers". These are the same people /parties who refused to allow the people of Scotland the opportunity to vote on their incoherent proposals. These are the same people/parties who have had ample opportunity to get devolution right but, by their own admission, have failed to do so.

Why should we trust them now? How much more of their constitutional tinkering are we supposed to tolerate?

It's time to end the uncertainty. It's time to put a stop to the endless constitutional "fixes". It's time to acknowledge that devolution is dead.

It's time for independence.

'No' receives most campaign cash | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

The pro-Union group Better Together raised more cash during the Scottish independence referendum campaign than the "Yes" side, official figures show.

Peter A Bell's insight:

Even at this late stage in the referendum campaign the BBC, along with the rest of the British establishment, doesn't seem to have realised that the Yes campaign's most valuable resource was not pounds but people.

Suzy Houston: Why A Yes Vote Is Not A Betrayal Of My English Roots | National Collective

Suzy Houston: Why A Yes Vote Is Not A Betrayal Of My English Roots | National Collective | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Sixteen years ago this month my dad drove me and a small car load of my worldly possessions (including a floral ironing board recently purchased especially for the occasion from Woolworth’s) three hundred miles from Stamford in Lincolnshire to Murano Street halls of residence in Glasgow. I was just starting out on an undergraduate degree and, as it turned out, the beginning of a new life in Scotland which would span the next decade and beyond. Why on earth I felt that an ironing board was necessary for my transition to student life, I can no longer recall. Needless to say, it was never used for its intended function, but instead was hastily up-cycled as an innovative drinks-table-cum-dirty-ashtray-storage-facility and was finally abandoned completely some weeks later when a drunken individual attempted to further repurpose it as a kind of ironic day-bed, causing it to collapse spectacularly amidst a filthy mushroom cloud of grey fag ash.
