Intelligence club 'could snub Yes vote Scotland'

Intelligence club 'could snub Yes vote Scotland' | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
THE UK would be more willing to share intelligence with New Zealand than with an independent Scotland, according to a Home Office report.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Surely at least some of those minded to vote No next year must be disturbed by the increasingly wild-eyed and senseless stuff coming out of these emissaries from the British state. The unseemly eagerness to tear up long-standing agreements and abandon perfectly workable arrangements must be perplexing to thinking people regardless of their position on the constitutional question. The more so because there seems to be no reason for it other than an infantile petulance at Scotland's effrontery in daring to challenge the cosy status quo that (coincidentally, I'm sure) serves those same emissaries rather handsomely.

Surely more than just the brows of committed independence supporters will be furrowed in bewildered annoyance at Theresa May's stumbling and stuttering response to the completely predictable question about the British state's apparent willingness to cooperate on security matters with New Zealand but not with Scotland. The fact that this point evidently hadn't even occurred to her merely compounds the casual contempt for Scotland exhibited by May and all the other British politicians seconded to Project Fear.

Likewise the fact that she seems blithely unaware that Scotland is already a totally separate jurisdiction. Nothing in her remarks suggests that she has taken any account of this reality.

From all of this even some in the No camp must conclude that Theresa May's brief was, not to deliver a rational assessment of some aspect of the post-independence relationship between Scotland and rUK with a view to informing the debate, but merely to say stuff that she thought sounded scary enough to deter people from even thinking about voting Yes.

The purpose of these flying visits to Scotland by British politicians is supposed to be to sow seeds of uncertainty and fear. But increasingly the questions raised are not about the luridly imagined perils of restoring Scotland's rightful constitutional status. More and more what is being questioned are the motives and mentality of those doing the lurid imagining.

Sending the least popular Englishmen to plead with the Scots: that was a good move

Sending the least popular Englishmen to plead with the Scots: that was a good move | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
That was a strange tactic of the English party leaders, to try and convince Scotland not to vote for independence from England, by sending up all the English people they dislike the most, who have made them consider independence in the first place. If that doesn’t work maybe Cameron will dig up Thatcher and send her to the middle of Glasgow as well.

Peter A Bell's insight:

I'm not sure how it is possible to absolve Nick Robinson of being a liar when he incontrovertibly lied when he claimed that Alex Salmond had not answered his question. Everybody who watched that press conference heard the First Minister respond to Robinson at length.

I would wholeheartedly agree that we will require a "good Scots degree of grace and magnanimity" after a Yes vote. But we will also need a good Scots degree of realism. We cannot expect any measure of grace and magnanimity from the British state and those who, over the course the referendum campaign, have shown themselves to be absolutely committed to the preservation of the old order and the old ways.

What we need to ask ourselves is whether, as we set out to build anew this nation of ours, we want to carry over remnants of the social, economic and political system we are hoping to leaving behind. At the very least, we need to ask ourselves if we want people who considered it acceptable to lie to and threaten the people of Scotland in positions of significant influence.
