Scottish independence: May warns of terror threat

Scottish independence: May warns of terror threat | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
An independent Scotland’s ability to fight terrorism would be “diminished” as the country would lose out on key intelligence from MI6 and MI5, Home Secretary Theresa May warned today.
Peter A Bell's insight:

This is, of course, no more than a rather contrived variation on the old theme of "Too wee! Too poor! Too stupid!". While every other country in the world manages its own security, Scotland is held to be uniquely incapable in this regard, as in all others.

All those other countries which enjoy the normal constitutional status of independence also manage to cooperate with one another in matters of security knowing that this is to their mutual benefit. It's not quite clear from Theresa May's little exercise in scaremongering whether she considers that Scotland's innate inadequacy extends to such cooperative efforts or if she is making some thinly-veiled threat that the government of rUK would refuse to collaborate with the Scottish Government in efforts to combat terrorism and organised crime.

If the former, then I would ask her to explain what grounds she has for supposing that Scotland is so incorrigibly inept. Although I would not expect any kind of meaningful response to such an enquiry. The usual practice of duplicitous British nationalists when questioned so directly on their contempt for the people of Scotland is indignant denial of the contempt that is glaringly apparent in their utterances.

If the latter is true - if May is actually saying that rUK would not cooperate with Scotland on matters of security - is this not a totally irresponsible attitude? I'm pretty sure other nations will want to know whether this reckless pettiness applies only to Scotland, or if it is more generalised.

Juncker: No automatic EU entry for Scots

Juncker: No automatic EU entry for Scots | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
JEAN-CLAUDE Juncker has made clear he will respect the outcome of September's referendum but signalled that in the event a Yes vote, Scotland's membership of the European Union would not be a simple, automatic process.
Peter A Bell's insight:

I see we have the usual doltish quote from Better Together. This time they take a simple statement of the obvious from Jean-Claude Juncker and insist that what he actually did was read out a passage from one of their ludicrous scare-mongering leaflets.

All that the incoming President of the European Commission said was that there is no such thing as "automatic" membership of the EU. Well, duh! We already knew that. The very idea of "automatic" membership is ridiculous. Which is why the sensible people - that would be those outside the No campaign hierarchy - are talking about CONTINUING membership. a concept which the Blair McDougall and his Tory bosses seem quite unable to grasp.

The anti-independence campaign is frantically trying to drown out sensible, rational voices in the referendum campaign. Voices which invariably contradict their shrill prophesies of doom. voices such as that of Sionaidh Douglas-Scott, professor of European law and human rights at Oxford University and author of an authoritative book on EU constitutional law.

Project Fear's inane propaganda on Scotland being expelled/excluded from the EU disintegrated a long time ago. They've changed their tune and are now frantically trying to sell the idea that Scotland's transition to membership of the EU as an independent nation will be massively complex and hugely costly. But, given that their original story was so embarrassingly wrong, why should we lend any credence to this new version?

Tougher than Tories pledge will help No camp - MP

Tougher than Tories pledge will help No camp - MP | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
LABOUR’S shadow work and pensions minister has said Scots are just as supportive as voters in the rest of the UK in wanting to “control” social security as she insisted her controversial pledge to be tougher than the Tories on benefits would help the party’s campaign against independence.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Rachel Reeves appears to have declared herself an expert on what "people in Scotland" think and want. I surely can't be the only one wondering by what authority she makes such a claim. surely others are just as curious as myself about how Ms Reeves comes by such insights.

There is certainly nothing in her quoted comments to suggest that she is any better informed about Scotland and its politics than, say, Gordon Brown, who famously claimed to be unaware of the McCrone Report. Indeed, when she trots out such glib inanities as her assertion that, "The SNP says that independence will solve all our problems", we can only assume that Rachel Reeves is as distant and disconnected from the referendum debate as any of the British politicians who have been sent north to wag a superior finger at "people in Scotland".

Here's a novel suggestion for Ms Reeves and her arrogant, condescending ilk. Maybe it would be a good idea to ask "people in Scotland" what they think rather than tell them. We can think and speak for ourselves. And even if we were to let someone speak for us, it is unlikely that we would choose someone who has absolutely no awareness of Scotland's political culture, no knowledge of our politics, and no understanding of our priorities and aspirations.

Rachel Reeves wouldn't even be on the list.

Scottish independence: Talks on additional powers

Scottish independence: Talks on additional powers | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
INFORMAL discussions on bringing the next wave of powers to Holyrood have begun between the three main unionist parties in Westminster, a senior Liberal Democrat coalition figure has told The Scotsman.
Peter A Bell's insight:

These are not "talks on additional powers". They are talks on how to withhold powers from the Scottish Parliament while putting on enough of a show of unity and intent so as to continue the deception. The British parties are NOT planning on any kind of meaningful further devolution. They are planning on burdening the Scottish Parliament with additional responsibilities whilst cutting off the funding that it needs in order to fulfil those responsibilities.

The British parties and the UK Government have no interest in empowering those who would challenge the supremacy of Westminster. Their interests are best served by crippling the Scottish Parliament and bringing it into disrepute. And that is precisely what they will seek to do if we vote No.

A Yes vote is the only way to protect our parliament and our democracy.
