Mark Frankland: WHY ONLY A 'YES' VOTE IN THE REFERENDUM OFFERS ANY HOPE TO SCOTLAND'S MOST DESPERATE PEOPLE

Mark Frankland: WHY ONLY A 'YES' VOTE IN THE REFERENDUM OFFERS ANY HOPE TO SCOTLAND'S MOST DESPERATE PEOPLE | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Yesterday I took a ride up the Nith valley to deliver a first consignment of food parcels to our latest satellite outlet. My destination was Kirkconnel in name and ‘Post Industrial’ in nature. ‘Post Industrial’ is one of those new phrases that has crept in to the way we speak over the last few years. Detroit of course is the ‘Post Industrial’ pin up. Post Industrial describes all the places that the world has left behind. The old engine rooms that once drove and fuelled the Empires and World Wars of the West. The towns and cities where once upon a time coal was mined and ships were built and cars assembled. Places which don’t do much of anything any more. Places which nobody has the faintest clue what to do with.

Look, Scotland!…I’m still standing. I was wrong about the vote and I lost the referendum but I’ve come out the other side unscathed. I remain an independista, an unflinching Scottish Nationalist and convinced that one day, after my time, we will be sovereign again.

Caroline Molloy is Editor of OurNHS and a freelance writer. Since then she has been campaigning alongside local and national groups to defend the NHS.

Scottish independence: Our day of destiny

THE people of Scotland will go to the polls in record numbers today when two and a half years of campaigning culminate in the most important vote in the country’s history.
Peter A Bell's insight:

I was at Perth Concert Hall last night for Alex Salmond' s final speech of the campaign. The atmosphere in the hall; amongst the crowd outside; in the pub afterwards and on the streets was wonderful. A real feeling of community and empowerment.

It saddens me that some people choose not to be part of this. That they choose to stand aside from history. That they choose sour sniping from the sidelines rather than constructive participation in a quite magnificent process of growth and transformation.

It saddens me that, for so many, self-fulfilling cynicism will displace aspiration and fear triumph over hope.

It saddens me to know that many, perhaps most, of those who vote No today will in the coming months and years have cause to bitterly regret that choice. They will know the painful pangs of futile remorse.

Whatever the result, I will live out my days knowing that I have been part of something really special. Those who vote No will never enjoy that feeling. I feel sorry for them.

Renata Hill's comment, September 18, 10:24 PM
<sigh> Well, Peter, according to the BBC live update page, it's not looking good for Yes. Damnit! Also, the trolls have come out on the Yes Facebook pages and are spilling their spite and evil rancor everywhere. AUGH!
Renata Hill's comment, September 19, 1:06 PM
I followed a live stream on the voting until the end. That 1/2 hour or so when there was only an 8K vote separation was a breathless period! However, as I said many times last night on FB, the results were NOT a failure! The Scottish people have empowered themselves more today than in the last 300 years, demonstrating to the world that they demand change. I so hope that you all can roll with this momentum and create new opportunities for yourselves. Self-determination IS possible as evinced by the truly impressive voter turnout -- at least 80% in every constituency and 2 with 90%! If only voters in the States would participate with such passion. Finally, kudos to you, Ms. Sturgeon, Mr. Salmond, all the other activists who devoted their passion and hopes to this cause. You've energized your nation!

Scotland's day of reckoning: the polls are open

The polls have opened on a historic day for Scotland as voters determine whether the country should remain part of the United Kingdom.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Good to see that Gordon Brown's media manipulators are still on the job. That guff about him being "a leading figure in the No campaign who has been key in securing the fast-tracked pledge for more powers" is clearly the work of one of Brown's spin-quacks.
