Alex Salmond accused of 'talking down' Royal Navy

Alex Salmond accused of 'talking down' Royal Navy | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
Alex Salmond has faced accusations of talking down the Royal Navy after claiming that Britain’s maritime defence is based on “prestige, not performance.”
Peter A Bell's insight:

Distortion courtesy of Simon Johnson.  Deflection courtesy of Gemma Doyle. They share credit for dishonesty.

And Alex Salmond's perfectly valid point about the dearth of surface vessels in Scotland remains unanswered as the British nationalists hide behind service personnel they aren't fit to be in the same room with.

Scotland's Independence Campaign So Isn't Over.

Scotland's Independence Campaign So Isn't Over. | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
To hear the conventional wisdom here in Great Britain, you’d think that the campaign for Scottish independence had just suffered a complete and permanent defeat. You could’ve fooled me. There is plenty in the referendum result to give Scottish nationalists grounds for hope. And the unionists, plenty to worry about. We may look back [...]

Who is Lord Smith of Kelvin?

Who is Lord Smith of Kelvin? | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Lord Smith of Kelvin has been appointed to oversee the process of devolving more powers to Scotland. But who is he?

Peter A Bell's insight:

Was the Scottish Government consulted about this appointment? Or is this just an early example of the kind of high-handed treatment we can expect from Westminster now that they have been emboldened and empowered by those who chose to vote away their own sovereignty?

Shadow cabinet minister Chuka Umunna: I can only think of two Labour MSPs

Shadow cabinet minister Chuka Umunna: I can only think of two Labour MSPs | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
Shadow cabinet minister Chuka Umunna was caught out when questioned about his party's team in Scotland after only being able to identify two of Labour's senior MSPs.
Peter A Bell's insight:

The fact that Chuka Umunna doesn't know much about British Labour MSPs is trivial. What is more striking is his completely dishonest claim that his party wants to give people power. British Labour has spent the last three years urging the people of Scotland to reject their own sovereignty. They joined forces with the Tories, Ukip, the Orange Order and other even more odious groups in a concerted effort to prevent the people of Scotland taking power to themselves.

British Labour, and particularly British Labour in Scotland, has betrayed the people it is supposed to represent and the principles for which it is supposed to stand. Compared to that, forgetting the names of some very forgettable British Labour MSPs is a matter of no significance whatever.

We said No

Believe it or not, despite the empty feeling in my stomach, I don’t see a No vote as all that much of a disappointment. We were living in the days of a No vote anyway, given that the Kingdom has been United for the entirety of my life. The consequences of a No were never something untested and hypothetical – they were something we were experiencing anyway.

A lie won't fly

Scots voted No, in the end, on a ‘vow’ of greater devolution. Every Scot I have spoken to understands that the promised transfer of power can only take place if the books are balanced and Scots no ...
Peter A Bell's insight:

Eric Joyce misses the crucial point that has bedevilled the SNP's self-imposed convention of not voting on England-only legislation. So long as Scotland remains in the union and Westminster controls our budget there are many areas of superficially England-only legislation which can have profound implications for Scotland's finances.

There surely comes a point at which ever more desperately contrived constitutional tinkering with sole purpose of preserving the old order and the old ways regardless of the consequences for democracy becomes so complex and problematic that even people like Eric Joyce have to recognise that the union is broken beyond repair.

Gordon Brown warns Westminster must deliver more powers

Gordon Brown warns Westminster must deliver more powers | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
THE former prime minister is expected to warn party leaders they risk the threat of Scotland splitting away again unless they act quickly to deliver on their promise of more powers.
Peter A Bell's insight:

If we are now dependent on Gordon Brown then we are truly screwed. But the reality is that this self-appointed trumpet speaks for nobody but himself. He has no authority. He has no mandate. He has no credibility.

Gordon Brown does NOT speak for Scotland. He has declared his allegiance to the ruling elites of the British state. Scotland has its own parliament. Our democratically elected government speaks for the nation, not this pompous, self-righteous, self-important, self-regarding, self-aggrandizing buffoon.
