Why the pro-unionist campaign is falling apart

Why the pro-unionist campaign is falling apart | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

The UK establishment has united together in a desperate effort to protect London rule over Scotland. This collaboration is obvious both in the fact that the three Westminster establishment parties are happy to put aside their differences (as small as they are these days) and join forces in opposition to greater autonomy for Scotland, and from the way that the corporate mainstream media has continued to present desperately slanted, and often outright biased analysis.

Salmond's personal letter to Scotland: let's do this

Salmond's personal letter to Scotland: let's do this | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
The people of Scotland will hold power in their hands tomorrow as they vote to determine their country's future, the First Minister said in a personal letter to the electorate.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Alex Salmond is undoubtedly correct when he says that the referendum campaign has changed Scotland forever. What people have to realise is that it has changed Scotland in ways that are not compatible with being part of the British state.

There are many ways of looking at the choice facing te people of Scotland tomorrow. We can regard it as a choice between resigning ourselves to the economic imperatives of the neo-liberal consensus, or taking up the challenge of finding a better way.

We can regard it as a choice between squandering our resources on obscene weapons of mass destruction and bail-outs for criminally incompetent banksters, or applying those resources to the task of banishing the blight of grinding poverty.

We can regard it as a choice between keeping democratic power in the hands of the people who call Scotland their home, or meekly handing that power back to a cabal of politicians we did not elect and politicians who fail to represent us even although we voted for them.

Or we can view it as a choice between making Scotland a normal nation, or continuing an endless process of constitutional tinkering whose overarching priority is the preservation of the old order and the old ways.

Scotland has gone through a political awakening. The people have found their voice. They have recognised their power and their potential. This popular power is wholly incompatible with the concept of parliamentary sovereignty which underpins the British state. There can be no constitutional settlement short of independence which resolves the tension between popular sovereignty and parliamentary sovereignty.

A No vote is a vote for years and perhaps decades of constitutional bickering, uncomfortable compromise and political uncertainty. The constitutional issue can only be resolved by a Yes vote.

Pride is a thing I've often railed against. Anyone with the wit to type "Roddy Macdonald" "Gay" and "Pride" into Google will see that for themselves. Why the hell should one be proud of being gay? One just is. Just like how the hell should one be proud of being Scots? It is an accident of birth.
