Now and Then: Norway, Scotland, and why I was wrong about the arc of insolvency

Now and Then: Norway, Scotland, and why I was wrong about the arc of insolvency | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

I have often regretted coining the phrase “the arc of insolvency” in this column in 2008 to describe the financial crisis as it afflicted Iceland and Ireland. It was only ever one side of the story. While some neoliberal small nations exploded because of their irresponsible banks, the rest of the Nordic arc - Denmark, Sweden, Finland - passed through the eye of the storm largely unscathed. Certainly, in Norway, where I have been hanging out this week, there is no sign of any financial hangover from the great crash.

A lie won't fly

Scots voted No, in the end, on a ‘vow’ of greater devolution. Every Scot I have spoken to understands that the promised transfer of power can only take place if the books are balanced and Scots no ...
Peter A Bell's insight:

Eric Joyce misses the crucial point that has bedevilled the SNP's self-imposed convention of not voting on England-only legislation. So long as Scotland remains in the union and Westminster controls our budget there are many areas of superficially England-only legislation which can have profound implications for Scotland's finances.

There surely comes a point at which ever more desperately contrived constitutional tinkering with sole purpose of preserving the old order and the old ways regardless of the consequences for democracy becomes so complex and problematic that even people like Eric Joyce have to recognise that the union is broken beyond repair.

Gordon Brown warns Westminster must deliver more powers

Gordon Brown warns Westminster must deliver more powers | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
THE former prime minister is expected to warn party leaders they risk the threat of Scotland splitting away again unless they act quickly to deliver on their promise of more powers.
Peter A Bell's insight:

If we are now dependent on Gordon Brown then we are truly screwed. But the reality is that this self-appointed trumpet speaks for nobody but himself. He has no authority. He has no mandate. He has no credibility.

Gordon Brown does NOT speak for Scotland. He has declared his allegiance to the ruling elites of the British state. Scotland has its own parliament. Our democratically elected government speaks for the nation, not this pompous, self-righteous, self-important, self-regarding, self-aggrandizing buffoon.

'We Couldn't Have Designed A Worse Fucking Campaign'

'We Couldn't Have Designed A Worse Fucking Campaign' | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
On Monday morning, I bumped into a senior member of the shadow cabinet, who was standing with a pair of aides to Ed Miliband at Euston station, all of them clutching trolley bags. "We're off to save the union," said the shadow minister, wit...
Peter A Bell's insight:

Only those looking at Scotland's referendum campaign through the distorting lens of the British media imagine that Gordon Brown was a significant player. So-called journalists regurgitate the overblown hagiographies supplied to them by Brown's media manipulators apparently totally convinced that they are providing some uniquely perspicacious insight into Scotland's politics. They are embarrassingly wrong. But evidently content to be so.

These are the same fools who hear Cameron say that the union has been saved "for a generation" and accept this as unchallengeable fact for no better reason that it has oozed from the lying mouth of a senior British politician. Just as it never occurred to these self-appointed expert commentators and analysts to question any of the propaganda pumped out by the British state in the course of the referendum campaign, so they don't think to challenge the received wisdom of their treasured highly-placed sources.

Unsurprisingly, those sources take advantage of the fawning deference afforded them by indolent hacks who will guzzle whatever titbits are offered to them and then spit these out onto the mainstream media untasted and undigested.

There is a reality to which these self-styled political correspondents remain blind due their insistence on looking to London to see what is happening in Scotland. That reality is that membership of pro-independence parties in Scotland has soared in the few days since the referendum. Far from disintegrating in the face of defeat, the Yes campaign continues to grow and develop. Demand for another referendum is growing apace and will soon become irresistible. And all of this is happening with London-based journalists even being aware of it.

It is not only British Labour that needs to learn lessons from Scotland's independence referendum campaign. The British media should also be taking a long hard look at itself. But we all know that isn't going to happen.

Who is Lord Smith of Kelvin? | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Lord Smith of Kelvin has been appointed to oversee the process of devolving more powers to Scotland. But who is he?

Peter A Bell's insight:

Was the Scottish Government consulted about this appointment? Or is this just an early example of the kind of high-handed treatment we can expect from Westminster now that they have been emboldened and empowered by those who chose to vote away their own sovereignty?
