Independence: SNP wants foreign students to stay on

Independence: SNP wants foreign students to stay on | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
FOREIGN students should be encouraged to stay in an independent Scotland after graduation to help boost the economy, the Scottish Government says.
Peter A Bell's insight:

It may be that Tory MSP, Alex Johnstone, is not an idiot. It is quite possible that he is not a cloth-eared buffoon. I am prepared to accept that he might only appear to be a turd-brained dullard due to his determination to adhere to the scaremongering agenda of Project Fear.

How else to explain the fact that, while John Swinney talks of post-graduate visas, Johnstone only hears "illegal immigrants"? How else to explain why Johnstone is totally oblivious to the fact that the people Swinney is referring to CANNOT be illegal immigrants?

How else to explain why, when Swinney outlines a perfectly reasonable policy intended to benefit Scotland, Johnstone's knee-jerk reaction is to reach into Project Fear's rag-bag of scare stories and pull out the one that he imagines fits the circumstances - "border patrols"?

Apparently, it never occurred to Alex Johnstone to wonder why someone with a legal right to stay in Scotland, as well as a job or business, a home and a place in the community, would want to leave all this to go to England where, if Johnstone is to be believed, they would be most unwelcome, prohibited from seeking gainful employment and hounded by border police.

It is perhaps best that we draw a discreet veil over Mr Johnstone's foolishness. It's getting more and more difficult to give him the benefit of the doubt regarding his intellectual capacities.

“There is little doubt that the current rules on international student visas will put international students off applying. That’s the unanimous view of Scotland’s universities, the National Union of Students and the Scottish Government."

I am beginning to love the Scotsman, its scare stories are better than the old Hammer horror movies.
