Row as thousands are set to join disputed Orange parade

Row as thousands are set to join disputed Orange parade | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
THOUSANDS of members of the Orange Order are to gather in an affluent coastal town, sparking claims the parade is disruptive, divisive and unrepresentative of the local population.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Sickening hypocrisy from the terminally odious Jackie Baillie whose criticisms of the Orange Order look disgustingly dishonest when she is happy to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with these same "deliberately provocative" people in the campaign to deny the sovereignty of Scotland's people.

Catholics are most pro-Yes religious group, claims academic

Catholics are most pro-Yes religious group, claims academic | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
SCOTS of an Irish-Catholic background are the most likely religious grouping to vote for independence in this year's referendum, according to an eminent academic.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Professor Tom Devine appears to be suggesting that George Galloway was talking a lot of irresponsibly provocative sh*t when he tried to invoke a sectarian divide which, at least in terms of the constitutional question, simply doesn't exist.

Fears independence referendum could be sparking rise in anti-English racism in Scotland

Fears independence referendum could be sparking rise in anti-English racism in Scotland | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
SCOTTISH Tories' justice spokeswoman Margaret Mitchell called for extra steps to be taken to ensure the debate on next year's referendum remains measured and fair.
Peter A Bell's insight:

There is no ethnic component to Scotland's civic nationalist movement.  Margaret Mitchell and her ilk are to be condemned for trying to bring ethnic identity into the referendum debate just as George Galloway is to be condemned for his efforts to incite sectarianism and xenophobia.

Wings over Scotland | The brick wall of bigotry

Wings over Scotland | The brick wall of bigotry | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

We had a fairly astonishing conversation on Twitter yesterday, after we ran this piece on an ugly incident at a July 12th parade (if that’s not tautology) in Belfast earlier this month. It was such a spectacular exhibition of doublethink, disingenuity and flat-out denial we felt it was worth sharing it with a wider audience.

Scottish Catholics are being desperately wooed by the SNP; they could swing the result

Scottish Catholics are being desperately wooed by the SNP; they could swing the result | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
The big leap in support for Scottish independence, as shown by the ICM’s recent poll, is a tribute to the campaigning  zeal of the SNP. They and their radical Left allies dominate the public spaces in west-central Scotland where often the pro-unionist "Better Together" folk are hardly to be seen. Other surveys show that voters [...]

If it wasn't for inane simplisms and facile stereotypes would Tom Gallagher have any thoughts at all?

Independent Scotland’s ‘Thatcher-style economy’

Independent Scotland’s ‘Thatcher-style economy’ | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
GEORGE Galloway has warned that Scotland could be dominated by the politics of “grudge and resentment” if the country votes for independence.
Peter A Bell's insight:

I sincerely hope that we can rely on George Galloway's promise that he will never again stand for election in Scotland. It's probably a wise decision on his part too as he's pretty much burned his boats with that part of the Scottish electorate which is not susceptible to his attempts to play the sectarian card.

This is unpleasant and unprincipled stuff from a man for whom I, like many, used to have a modicum of respect. In no small part that respect was afforded to someone who had the courage to raise his voice against the malign practices of imperialist powers in distant lands. Practices which include the very wanton divisiveness - setting community against community - that Galloway now seeks to bring to the politics of Scotland.

Reading Galloway's remarks about religious and ethnic minorities I was reminded of what Alan "Citizen" Smart said of his brother and spokesperson for British Labour in Scotland, Ian Smart, when he too sought to promote racial and sectarian animosity in the name of preserving the British state.

"He is not doing this out of ignorance or prejudice, but out of political calculation. The calculation that if he asserts it loudly and often enough Scotland's ethnic communities and others can be scared into voting No."

Make no mistake! Galloway's intent is malicious. He may no longer be a part of its establishment, but he still instinctively serves the structures of power and privilege which define the British state. His purpose is to sow seeds of mistrust and hatred and create in Scotland the kind of fractured society that has been the legacy of British imperialism elsewhere.

Ian Smart was judged worse than a racist by his brother because of his cynical efforts to drive a wedge between various sections of Scottish society regardless of the harm this might do. Galloway must be judged worse still because, if his claimed credentials as a champion of the Palestinians and others are to be taken seriously, he knows better than most the long term consequences of the divide and conquer strategy to which he has resorted on behalf of Project Fear.

Galloway should be hounded off every stage in Scotland where he has the audacity to appear. Not in the hope of suppressing his hateful message. But to show the world that his repulsive brand of politics has no place in our country.

Spectator: Scottish Nationalism And Catholicism

Spectator: Scottish Nationalism And Catholicism | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

The level of debate on Scottish independence has gone through various phases over the years and while the Unionists point to SNP assertions and false claims, successive Labour and Tory governments have consistently lied about a whole variety of issues that have affected Scotland. For many years after World War I, it was impossible to get accurate figures for Scottish was losses, which when they were published, showed exactly why. Scottish regiments suffered higher war losses than those of any other part of the UK - bar none. As a member of the economic committee of the SNP which did much work on the oil situation in the 1970s, under the guidance of Donald Bain, I always followed with interest, the government of the day's figures on oil production and the revenues generated. Gavin McCrone, the government economist published his report during the period of the Wilson government, when Denis Healey was Chancellor. McCrone's report was so damaging to the UK government's case against independence, they kept it a secret for over thirty years. Denis Healey has just admitted they "massaged" the figures; in other words they lied. Healey is now a Lord and as one of the "untouchables" he can now admit he was a liar while in office.
