Minister warns oil jobs at risk under independence

SCOTTISH oil jobs will be lost and energy prices could soar if Scotland becomes independent, Conservative Energy Minister Michael Fallon has warned.
Peter A Bell's insight:

What kind of an idiot imagines population is a relevant criterion on which to base funding of renewable energy projects. The UK Government spends that money in Scotland because that is where the resources are. Independence does not alter geography. After Scotland's rightful constitutional status is restored we will still have the largest potential for wind and wave energy in Europe.

If Scotland becomes an independent nation in the future, it cannot rely on dwindling oil and gas reserves, as a means of maintaining a healthy trade surplus. Oil itself will of course still flow from the existing and planned fields in Scotland's territorial waters.

Ed Davey tells party conference that Scottish independence would make a 'tough task' tougher.

"If England has to do it for itself, by itself, it will be probably be even tougher, given Scotland has relatively more renewable sources.

"Yet the economics of renewables is that Scotland needs English consumers to help pay for the renewables, as the technology develops."

Is this buffoon trying to tell us that England would stop buying electricity from Scotland after independence? Is he suggesting that the RUK government would impose some sort of illegal trade sanctions?

Sturgeon vows to slash fuel bills by £70 on Yes vote win

NICOLA Sturgeon has announced a plan to cut the average family's fuel bill by £70 if Scots vote for independence in next year's referendum.
Peter A Bell's insight:

The Scottish Government comes up with a perfectly sensible scheme to reduce domestic consumers' energy bills and British Labour's response is this spluttering, barely coherent rant from Tom Greatrex. It's not difficult to see who is panicking.

The proposal announced by Nicola Sturgeon is really rather clever. Not only does it easily trump Ed Miliband's headline-grabbing but ultimately pointless "price freeze", it spikes one of the main arguments of the anti-renewables/pro-nuclear lobby. Removing the costs of reshaping the energy market from household bills will force those campaigning against the development of renewable energy to be more honest about their motives.

I'm assuming any contracted subsidy for renewable power will be listed as a liability and therefore be part of the negotiated settlement. I don't see how it would cost an Independent Scotland anymore than it does proportionately.
