Monro skeptical on prisoner votes | Holyrood Magazine

Scotland’s outgoing senior prison inspector has said he is not personally convinced of the case for giving prisoners the vote.


In an exclusive interview with Holyrood before stepping down this month, Brigadier Hugh Monro, HM Chief Inspector of Prisons, said he was “not a great fan” of altering the status quo, questioning whether a change is necessary both from a human rights and rehabilitation perspective.

I'd go along with this. I can understand why the Scottish Government didn't want to muddy the waters with the issue of votes for prisoners, but ther is a strong case to be made. I would like to think the Scotttish Government is at least open to hearing that case.

 It's not very often I find myself at odds with Nicola Sturgeon, but on the matter of votes for prisoners I simply cannot agree with her hard-line stance. It is, she claims, a position informed by reasons of "principle, law and consistency". Perhaps not surprisingly she left political expediency off that list.
