Scottish ‘Green-card’ Lottery

The Scottish Government confirmed this week, that in order to publicise the coming referendum on Scottish independence, they would launch a competition for prospective immigrants.

The Saltire Visa lottery, under which up to ten thousand families could win the opportunity to migrate to Scotland, assuming independence happens, is to be run along similar lines to the USA Diversity Lottery which is run every year to give people of all nationalities the chance to live and work in the US. https://www.dvlottery.state.gov

The competition will be advertised on BBC radio worldwide with a backdrop of stirring Scottish music from the Pipes and Drums of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards.

A spokeswoman for the Scottish Government confirmed that issuing of the visas was dependent on a ‘Yes’ vote in the Scottish independence referendum, unless they could get the UK Government to agree to widen the lottery program to England as well. She told our reporter, “As well as great publicity for the referendum, the Visa Lottery will increase global awareness of Scotland, which can only be good for tourism and trade.”

The Saltire Visa Lottery was the brainchild of an Irish economist and former sound engineer, Paulo ‘Fono’ O’Riley, who works for the LibDems in their PR and Media department.

Paulo stated that they had tested the Saltire Visa idea with a number of countries, including China and Ukraine and were surprised by the degree of positive reaction to the music and the Visa Lottery presentation.

The Scottish Government has been overwhelmed by the volume of premature applications from China before the competition officially opens next week, but stress that entries can only be processed on the official form and completed with all the necessary details.

A spokesperson for the SNP said the idea, ‘was a beacon of progressive thinking for the whole of the UK’.

Here’s a nice wee feelgood story to end the week, found by one of our covert field agents this afternoon. (Codename “Maw”.) Despite the extreme financial pressures on the British economy, the UK government has managed to stumble across a significant cash windfall – over half a billion pounds, in fact.

We should have our own National Lottery with all proceeds going to Scottish good causes. Obviously not to subsidise employment and sporting events in London. Problem solved. Is this one of the five hundred questions?
