BP boss’s warning on Scottish independence

BP boss’s warning on Scottish independence | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
SCOTTISH independence would create “big uncertainties” for BP, the boss of the energy giant has warned, in one of the most significant interventions in the referendum debate by a business leader.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Another "blow to the nationalists". It seems sometimes that nothing ever happens anywhere and nobody ever says anything but that the British press proclaims it to be a "blow to the nationalists". One might have thought that the SNP and/or the independence campaign would be showing some signs of buckling under this incessant rain of "blows". But not a bit of it. Polls show the trend towards a Yes vote continuing. We know that, were there an election tomorrow, the SNP would romp to victory - perhaps even increasing their majority. And the likes of Salmond and Sturgeon still get approval ratings such as British politicians can only fantasise about.

This all gives rise to the strong suspicion, at the very least, that these "blows to the nationalists" are entirely fictitious. A bit of wishful thinking by British nationalists desperate for some crumb of comfort as they see the campaign to deny the sovereignty of Scotland's people crumbling about their ears.

Bob Dudley? As the vast majority of people in Scotland would surely respond, "Who?". Nobody knows who he is. And few care what he says. Even those who are aware of who Bob Dudley is and who might have supposed that he speaks with some authority would surely have been disabused of that notion on hearing his sentimental claptrap about "Great Britain".

As scare stories go, a vague threat from some American oil company executive - speaking in an entirely personal capacity - that his firm might forego the profit-taking opportunities of Scotland's natural resources doesn't even rank with those Project Fear classics, "Airports will be bombed!" and "Roaming charges will increase!".

The notion that they might forego those opportunities for no more substantive reason than the uncertainties that are part of life is beyond ludicrous.

Bob Dudley is a manager. His role is to manage. To plan for uncertainty. To cope with change. He seem to be saying that he is not up to this task. His bosses, and BP shareholders, might want to take note.

Uncertainty uncertain (or is it?)

Uncertainty uncertain (or is it?) | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Along with more direct, overt scaremongering, it’s probably fair to say that the core theme of the “Better Together” anti-independence campaign to date has been “uncertainty”. Day after day sees the media and public assailed with neurotic demands for definitive answers about every conceivable aspect of an independent Scotland that in most cases couldn’t be answered by any nation on Earth, including the UK.
