Weirs give another £1m to SNP

Weirs give another £1m to SNP | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
TWO EuroMillions lottery winners have given another £1 million to the SNP, while donations to the Labour party lag far behind the Tories with less than a year until the next General Election, new figures show.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Scottish Conservative chief whip John Lamont's mouth working at several times the speed of his brain yet again when he says that the SNP is "clearly embarrassed" by the donations from Chris and Colin Weir. Why the hell should the SNP be "embarrassed" by large donations from decent folk like the Weirs any more than the Tories are embarrassed by massive injections of cash from the likes of Sir Michael Hintze? If the latter is perfectly legitimate, why not the former?

What is it about the Weir's money, acquired by gambling their own earnings on the lottery, that makes it tainted while Hintze's cash, acquired by gambling on the financial markets with other people's money, is pure as the driven snow?

Is there anything to the British parties in Scotland other than double-standards, hypocrisy and the kind of visceral resentment of the nation's democratically elected government that leads someone to make this sort of idiotic comment?

Know Who Your Friends Are

Know Who Your Friends Are | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

I thought it was a spoof at first until I read it myself but the list of donors to Better Together should be published as an ironic joke book (The Bumper Book of Greasy Palms). Is it too late for Christmas?

Peter A Bell's insight:

This is vested-interest Britain doing what it does best, stuffing dirty fivers in an envelope to defeat the people.

Scottish independence: Pro-Union donors revealed

Scottish independence: Pro-Union donors revealed | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
THE anti-independence campaign has received £1.6 million in donations, with a Premier League football club chairman and former soldiers with links to British intelligence among those contributing.
Peter A Bell's insight:

There was a time when Labour politicians and activists would have sacrificed major body parts rather than be associated with the kind of people who are bankrolling the anti-independence campaign. Changed days, indeed. We now find British Labour in Scotland more than happy to serve as stooges for their Tory partners.

But what of the true inheritors of Labour's proud historical legacy? Will their loyalty to the party that has betrayed them outweigh their desire to see a better, more socially just Scotland?

The not-so-smart money

The not-so-smart money | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Several weeks on, we still await answers from the No camp to several serious questions about their biggest donor, Ian Taylor of Vitol. But the ongoing furore (we’re really not sure issuing the Herald with a legal threat worked out the way Mr Taylor hoped it would) over his £500,000 donation has kept attention away from the other substantial contributors to the “Better Together” campaign fund.

Peter A Bell's insight:

I read what Peterhead businessman, Charles Richie, has to say on the subject of independence and I am forcefully reminded of the fact that it is futile to attempt to use reason to persuade a person from a position that they did not arrive at by reason.

I am also reminded that intellectual rigour is most definitely not a prerequisite of success in business.

Better Together donations row reaches Commons as new Vitol deal emerges

THE row over political donations by the head of oil trader Vitol was taken to the heart of Westminster when the issue was raised at Prime Minister's Questions by the SNP.

Peter A Bell's insight:

I look at Ian Taylor's picture accompanying yet another article about his firm's dubious practices and I'm amused to think that this is precisely what he sought to avoid when he set his lawyers on National Collective and Wings Over Scotland. Didn't work out too well for him, did it?

Row over Better Together donation | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Peter A Bell's insight:

The referendum belongs to the people of Scotland. It is disgraceful that Better Together is bringing it into disrepute in this way. They are showing complete contempt for the Scottish electorate.

Intelligence Finance

Intelligence Finance | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

What’s merging is not an alternative case for the Union but a war against the limited democracy we have. The revelation that Better Together is bankrolled (‘Tory to the core‘) by spivs, spooks and spies is maybe not surprising but it does clarify matters. All the big donors were Conservative supporters. But there’s murky backers emerging all over the place. Chief amongst them are the company ‘Hakluyt’ (named after a 16th century author who wrote about journeys to far-off lands). According to former Director Christopher James, Hakluyt: “places an unparalleled private intelligence network at the personal disposal of senior commercial figures.”

Better Together's coffers boosted by £1.3m in donations

Peter A Bell's insight:

Labour members, voters and supporters in Scotland need to look at Better Together's paymasters and ask themselves if these are the sort of people they want to be aligned with.

How many of those funding the anti-independence campaign can make a credible claim to have the interests of Scotland's people foremost in their hearts and minds?

Better Together’s Morality Vacuum | National Collective

Better Together’s Morality Vacuum | National Collective | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Today figures released by YouGov found that 43% of Scots believe that Better Together should return its £500,000 donation from Tory donor Ian Taylor. 34% believe that they should not. These findings place even more pressure on the no campaign to answer the serious questions raised by National Collective over four weeks ago. However, we must also reflect on why political donations matter. It requires reflection on the morality vacuum at the heart of ‘Better Together’.
