Scotland - It's About Democracy, Stupid

Scotland - It's About Democracy, Stupid | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
Much has been written about how the upcoming independence referendum represents a divorce between Scotland and England. But if we're making relationship analogies, let's just say that historically the British government is a power-hungry polygamist a...

A Yes vote means genuine democracy in Scotland - YouTube

A Yes vote means that we will always get the government we vote for, and that we – the people of Scotland – can decide the direction our country takes.

Gerry Hassan: A Scotland Beyond Yes And No – My Journey to Yes | National Collective

Gerry Hassan: A Scotland Beyond Yes And No – My Journey to Yes | National Collective | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

I want to live in a Scotland which is not defined by Yes and No – a world of ‘us’ and ‘them’ – of politics, families and friendships reduced to the emotions of football supporters and tribalism. I want to live in a world of one Scotland and many, multiple, diverse Scotlands.

Irvine Welsh: The Scots poll can give hope to the Left across Britain

Irvine Welsh: The Scots poll can give hope to the Left across Britain | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
Something strange and beautiful is happening in Scotland. The country is reinventing itself from the inside out. People are talking about their futures as if they actually have them. It’s that exhilarating, intoxicating and occasionally exasperating phenomenon at work: welcome back participatory democracy. How these islands have missed you.

Paul Cairney: Would an Independent Scotland Become a Consensus Democracy?

I have co-authored a paper with Anders Widfeldt on Scottish politics and policymaking, with the magnificently catchy title:

Comparing Politics and Policymaking in Sweden and the UK: Can we say that Scotland is a Scandinavian-style Consensus Democracy and a UK-style Majoritarian Democracy?

It's Democracy Stupid

It's Democracy Stupid | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

One of the most telling phrases in modern politics, “It’s the economy, stupid”, was coined by a strategist within Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign office to keep party activists on message.

New Labour and the Devolution of the Axe

New Labour and the Devolution of the Axe | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Neo-liberal globalisation is often understood in terms of a dichotomy between the state on one side and the market on the other – the more an economy is liberalised, the less the government is perceived to be able to implement distinctive policies. Set taxes too high, or regulate your labour market too heavily, and you will encourage capital flight and disinvestment. On these grounds, the state is – and ought to be – subject to the ‘laws’ of the market.

Scottish Independence: A Green Perspective | National Collective

Scottish Independence: A Green Perspective | National Collective | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Governments should be closer to people. I wish politicians would stop deciding to send teenagers to kill and die in foreign adventures. But if ministers are going to launch a war, they should not issue their commands from a limestone palace hundreds of miles away. There should be a good chance they know some of the families of those they command into the line of fire.

11 Reasons a Yes Vote Will Improve Democracy | National Collective

11 Reasons a Yes Vote Will Improve Democracy | National Collective | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

There are lots of reasons to Vote Yes in next months referendum, but some of the most compelling arguments are for the impact it will have on our democracy, not just in Scotland but across the UK. If we can show Westminster that there is truly another way to do things, then the argument for reform in that parliament grows even stronger.

The case for the British Union: don't believe a word

The case for the British Union: don't believe a word | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

One of the things I've always tried to get across is that the Bedroom Tax, benefits' sanctions, soaring unemployment, increasing poverty, widening inequality, low pay, zero-hours contracts, tolerance of tax avoidance and a whole range of other issues have not happened as the result of an evil spell cast by bad pixies.  All of the above have impacted on our lives because of decisions taken by politicians.

Scottish Parliament proves decisions best taken in Scotland

First Minister outlines political and economic case for completing powers of Parliament.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Alex Salmond: “I am 58 years old. For almost two thirds of my life, Scotland has been ruled by governments that it did not elect. That is simply no longer democratically acceptable."

It never was. Alex. It never was.

Democracy: How We Don't Really Have It

Democracy: How We Don't Really Have It | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

That title could be considered somewhat daft or inflammatory by some, but to many of us, it’s a totally justifiable statement.

Yes, we have directly elected politicians representing us in the House of Commons, and for those of us in Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, we also have our assorted devolved parliaments or assemblies – although for some strange reason, each has different powers and levels of responsibility.

Sign for Scotland: Why democracy will be stronger in an independent Scotland

Sign for Scotland: Why democracy will be stronger in an independent Scotland | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Many will say that we live in a stable democracy; the prospect of an army general orchestrating a coup d'etat, a mad monarch declaring themselves absolute ruler or even a Prime Minister refusing to leave office all seem pretty remote, and the ‘gentlemen’s agreements’ that underpins our society, despite being a poor substitute to a written constitution, do enough to ensure that elections will continue for the foreseeable future.
