Alistair Carmichael, the Scotland secretary, says SNP leader's liberal stance would render open borders deal unworkable
Peter A Bell's insight:

The most interesting bit of this story is the statement from the Home Office confirming that Scottish citizens would be entitled to joint citizenship in the "continuing United Kingdom" after independence. I wonder if they were aware that in issuing this statement they were making a complete fool of Better Together front-man, Alistair Darling. After all, it was he who said,

"I’m Scottish and I’m British. I’m proud to be both and I don’t see why anyone should make me choose between one and the other."

It seems that David Cameron's stooge was talking nonsense yet again. Which begs the question, can we put any faith at all in anything he says? And if we cant trust the British Labour back-bencher appointed by the Tory Prime Minister as his spokesperson then surely there is no reason whatever to believe any of the silly stories told by British nationalists.

Independence could lead to clashes over citizenship, says academic

INDEPENDENCE could lead to clashes between Scotland and the UK over who might be granted citizenship of the two countries, an expert on migration has warned.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Drew Smith, Scottish Labour's constitutional spokesman, provides a perfect example of a stock British nationalist reaction on an issue where they have nothing meaningful to say. Which is pretty much any issue you can name. Despite having been given a pretty detailed explanation of the post-independence options by an acknowledged expert and a clear statement of the Scottish Government's position, Smith continues to pretend that there is some big scary mystery around the matter of citizenship.

The reality, of course, is that there is no great mystery and nothing in the slightest bit scary. The only way that the matter of citizenship might become problematic is if the government of rUK chooses to make it so. And why would they do that? Petty spite? Is that really what the British state is reduced to?

Nationalists plan for dual citizenship

THE Scottish Government hopes Scots would be granted dual citizenship with the UK under independence, allowing them to keep British passports.

Peter A Bell's insight:

Perhaps Iain Gray would care to explain what reasons the rUK government might have for refusing dual citizenship. Or could it be that this is just him displaying the unthinking negativity that has contributed to making him such a failure as a politician?

What we see in Iain Gray is the mindset of the rabid British nationalist who believes that those "rebellious Scots" must be punished for their impertinence in challenging the divinely ordained primacy of the British state. These fanatics seriously expect that the rump British state will cut off its nose and various other organs and appendages simply to visit vengeance upon Scotland.

And, as if that was not demented enough, they genuinely suppose the rest of the world will join them in their mindless vendetta against a small nation that had the temerity to exercise its right of self-determination.
