Islands set to win key decision-making powers with unprecedented legislation

ORKNEY, Shetland and the Western Isles will be given more powers in a ground-breaking Islands Act in the event of a Yes vote in the independence referendum in 2014.
Peter A Bell's insight:

It doesn't seem to have been too difficult to get agreement from the Scottish Government on proposals for devolution within an independent Scotland. Which gives the lie to claims that the SNP tends to favour centralisation. Claims that never stood up to much scrutiny in any case.

What is missing from all of this is any statement from the UK Government about what they might propose in the unlikely event of a No vote in next year's referendum. We must add this to the already lengthy list of unanswered questions still facing the No campaign.

It is becoming increasingly difficult to find anything in the mainstream media relating to the referendum that is not spun to the point of total fantasy.

This is not, of course, the people of Orkney and Shetland telling Alex Salmond anything at all. It is two British nationalist politicians spinning lies about a threat of partition which simply doesn't exist in the real world outside the delusional fantasies of unionist propaganda.

An amendment to the Scotland Bill by the Earl of Caithness has highlighted the differences that exist in Scottish culture, says former MSP Jamie Stone.

Peter A Bell's comment, February 25, 2012 6:22 AM
Jamie Stone rightly points out that Rockall is, in law, part of Scotland and that the amendment proposed by Earl Crazy of Caithness is therefore incompetent. He omits to mention however that Orkney and Shetland are every bit as much part of Scotland as Rockall is. So the eejit Earl has got that one wrong as well.

Wings Over Scotland | Pity, not hate | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Over time, and particularly since the turn of 2013, this site’s attitude to the Unionist media in Scotland (which is to say, ALL of the media in Scotland) has undergone something of a shift. Previously we held its partisan spin and naked dishonesty in professional contempt, but more recently it’s become increasingly hard not to simply feel sorry for the poor beleaguered hacks on dying publications as they wrestle uncomprehendingly with their bleak future.

Peter A Bell's comment, March 20, 2012 5:35 AM
This is all nonsense on so many levels that it is hard to know where to start. But the claim that the Northern Isles "might not join" an independent Scotland is as good an example as any of this latest idiocy from Tavish Scott.

Surely it is obvious even to such a fanatical British nationalist as him that Orkney and Shetland are part of Scotland. And that they would necessarily remain part of Scotland after independence. That would be the starting position. Not, as the dullard suggests, that they would be somehow separate from Scotland with the option to "join" or not.
