Faslane investment ‘shows commitment to Scotland’

Faslane investment ‘shows commitment to Scotland’ | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
PLANS for a £31.5 million investment in the Faslane naval base have been unveiled by the UK government, demonstrating its commitment to a presence beyond next year’s referendum.
Peter A Bell's insight:

Murrison dutifully regurgitates the discredited and comprehensively debunked unionist claptrap about Scotland and Nato. The only thing that makes his remarks even vaguely interesting is the way in which he makes a complete fool of himself by presuming to know the representatives of the Scottish Government who met with Nato officials came away "disappointed" and "ashamed". How could he possibly be aware of the way these civil servants felt? How likely is it that these professionals would succumb to such emotions?

Certainly nothing in the subsequent statements fro the Scottish Government showed the slightest hint of "disappointment" or "embarrassment". Quite the contrary. And comments from less blatantly prejudiced observers tended to conclude that the Scottish Government had every reason to be satisfied with the outcome of the talks.

Murrison is the latest in a long line of anti-independence propagandists who have shown themselves to be prepared - nay, eager - to play the bumbling buffoon in the name of preserving the British state. The entertainment value of this clownish conduct is wearing very thin.

But the burning question is "Was he paid?"
Jim Arnott's curator insight, August 23, 2013 10:59 AM

At first I couldn't believe what I was reading and then I thought this is typical of the guff the Scotsman serves up to the good people of Scotland. What a pun o' mince or is it tripe.

Vote Yes in the 2014 Referendum on independence for Scotland.

Charles Patrick O'Brien's comment, August 24, 2013 10:53 AM
I remember 1974 give or take a year when we were promised the defence posts at the St.Enoch's (now gone) Hotel, and when the SNP M.P.,s dropped down from 11 to 4 or 6,these magical "positions" vanished,we,as usual, got nothing except more sand in the face.Independence is the only way forward nothing can ever happen by staying the same.

The Geo-Politics of Military Bases, Empire and Independence

The Geo-Politics of Military Bases, Empire and Independence | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

The Ministry of Defence’s latest threat to keep Faslane as sovereign territory in the event of Scottish Independence should be seen in the context of Britain’s imperial history of maintaining military bases against the wishes of local people across the world.

Really interesting news in Geopolitics and devolution.  If Scotland does vote to split form the UK, and if the UK even aloows the vote to mean something, what will happen to all the militray stationed in Scotland?  How about all the UK businesses there?  What will an independant Scotland do? What currency wil they have, the Euro? Will they even get into the EU? Lots of questions to answer here and way to many to list.  Something to think about though isn't it?

Beware Cyprus repeat at Faslane

Beware Cyprus repeat at Faslane | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

DOWNING Street has been quick to pour cold water on media reports that the Ministry of Defence (MoD) is toying with the notion of declaring the Trident nuclear submarine base in the Firth of Clyde a "sovereign base area", in the event of Scottish voters opting for independence. Effectively, this would mean Faslane and its nuclear stockpile remaining under British sovereignty, controlled by the MoD itself.

David Cameron urges English to help fight against Scottish independence

David Cameron urges English to help fight against Scottish independence | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
David Cameron and Alistair Darling are to place British identity at the centre of the Unionist case against independence by attempting to convince the English and Scots they are part of the same family.
Peter A Bell's insight:

We've seen all the evidence we need of how the British state "values" Scotland with the latest belligerent threat to annexe Scottish territory in the event of a Yes vote. The hypocrisy of David Cameron and his British Labour allies is almost as sickening as their vaunting arrogance.

SCOT goes POP!: UK government proposes military occupation of an independent Scotland. Will anti-nuclear No campaigners speak out against this?

One of the best teachers I ever had was a history teacher at Anniesland College. When he was explaining for us the significance of the West Lothian by-election in 1962 to the fortunes of the SNP, he mentioned that he had been a canvasser in that contest, but had only realised many decades later that he'd been a participant in something of a landmark election. He refused to tell us which party he'd campaigned for, from which I guessed that it probably wasn't the Nationalists. But he did add, when we were discussing what I presumed to be highly implausible 'what if?' scenarios, that he would be prepared to take up arms to defend Scottish independence if necessary, regardless of whether he had voted for it himself.

Alex Salmond accused of misleading voters over Trident base promises

Alex Salmond accused of misleading voters over Trident base promises | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
Both political opponents and allies of Scottish government say pledge to join Nato is at odds with stance on nuclear disarmamant
Peter A Bell's insight:

It is interesting to note how the British nationalists have back-pedalled on this issue. They started off with a blanket assertion that Scotland would not be allowed to join Nato. This has been eroded to the point where they are now desperately trying to contrive reasons why Nato might exclude Scotland. This imagined dispute over Faslane is the latest of these desperate concoctions.

There is no dispute over the fate of the British state's stockpiles of WMD. They will not be permitted to remain in Scotland. All that is left is to settle on a timetable for the removal of this obscenity. That is a matter of negotiation, not dispute.

Westminster threatens annexation of Clyde nuclear bases

Westminster threatens annexation of Clyde nuclear bases | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Despite recent promises that the anti-independence campaign would present a positive message, the UK Government is now threatening that if Scotland votes for independence Westminster could annexe the Faslane and Coulport bases on the Clyde.

Peter A Bell's insight:

We note that Menzies Campbell is not much concerned with the arrogant belligerence of this latest threat from the British state Or the blatant affront to democracy. Or the insult to the people and parliament of Scotland. No! Campbell's sole concern is that the SNP might gain some electoral advantage.

British nationalists taking shallowness to the molecular level.

Trident: 'extraordinary' attempt to bully Scotland | Scottish National Party | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Commenting on a report in the Guardian newspaper that the Westminster Government is examining plans to designate Trident as sovereign UK territory in the hope of keeping its weapons of mass destruction on the Clyde – despite clear opposition from both the people and the parliament of Scotland - SNP Westminster Leader and Defence Spokesperson Angus Robertson said:

“This is an extraordinary attempt by Westminster to bully Scotland. Neither the people nor parliament of Scotland want nuclear weapons dumped here, and we are clear that Trident would have to be removed as quickly as possible - only a Yes vote next September will empower Scotland to get rid of Trident, and the money saved help build a fairer society and stronger economy."
