If you were to believe some of our more excitable unionist friends you would think that we are currently living in some sort of dreadful conflict zone; a fearful, intimidating place, inhabited by '...

Peter A Bell: The Cybernat Diversion

Peter A Bell: The Cybernat Diversion | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

Project Fear's tactics are not subtle. It's propaganda techniques are pretty crude. The very phrase, "Better Together" is an example of a propaganda technique known as the "Glittering generality". It is a phrase which has a certain primitive emotional appeal but which is ultimately devoid of content. It doesn't represent anything real or present any meaningful argument.

Wings over Scotland | Weekend: Cybernats are made, not born

Wings over Scotland | Weekend: Cybernats are made, not born | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

The political is the personal. Nobody comes out of the womb with a view on the merits of the free market versus state interventionism – opinions are formed by someone’s experiences and environment. So where do “cybernats” come from? Speaking as one myself, and quite a recently minted one, let me see if I can explain it.

Bitten by the Cybernat - George Robertson is not a happy man

Bitten by the Cybernat - George Robertson is not a happy man | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

As an active online campaigner for Scotland's secession from the union I too can't help but be struck by the sheer hypocrisy of Robertson's anti-nationalist tirade. Nor can I do ther than see in it an echo of Iain Gray's unbecoming petulant rant when as he stepped down as leader of the British Labour & Unionist Party at Holyrood to take up his new postion in the dustbin of Scottish political history.

The truth is not something that either Gray or Robertson are equipped to recognise. But the truth evident to anyone who takes an interest in such things is that for every "Cybernat" there are ten "Cyberbrits" out there. And while the "Cybernats" grow less frenetic as confidence in Scotland's future as an independent nation grows so the "Cyberbrits" grow more rabid and bilious as their beloved British state diminishes.

Running Scared Yet?

Running Scared Yet? | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it

We're in the midst of a period of great propaganda and it's worth looking out and back at how this has worked (and failed) elsewhere.

Freedom of expression? Well if you want it and it's one on your side then be prepared to defend them, you may not like what Mr Ball said, but he has every right to say it and his party should have backed him to the hilt. It is after all, the broader feeling of party followers.

"It is after all, the broader feeling of party followers."

It seems that Mr Ball is not the only one with a proclivity for idiotic remarks. You're offering some strong competition there.

The broad view of the people of Scotland is that "British" troops are in Afghanistan killing civilians, simple!
