The UK head of the CBI, John Cridland, last night faced calls to quit from independence campaigners, after it emerged the group’s Scottish director Iain McMillan is to retire early in the wake of a U-turn that saw the business organisation reverse its plan to formally back the No campaign.

Peter A Bell's insight:

Will John Cridland announce his resignation?

And then withdraw it on the grounds that Betty from the canteen did it without authorisation?

Peter A Bell's insight:

It's not often that bitter, bilious Brian Wilson raises a laugh. But this pathetic attempt to divert attention from the magnificent farce of CBI incompetence is quite hilarious.

CBI U-turn on anti-independence stance

CBI U-turn on anti-independence stance | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
THE CBI performed an embarrassing U-turn last night when it applied to reverse its official registration as a supporter of the Better Together campaign.
Peter A Bell's insight:

It just keeps on getting worse for CBI. Not only have they made a total arse of the whole business, now John Cridland, in a despicable act of cowardice, is trying to pass the buck for this fiasco to a "junior member of staff in London".

They are condemned out of their own mouths every time they speak. They have effectively admitted to having taken a massively important decision, with grave implications for the whole organisation AND its members, without even thinking about it far less seeking legal advice.

There is no way back from this. It is not a matter of having lost credibility, the CBI's credibility is now in serious deficit. Even if the Electoral Commission allows them to withdraw their declaration of allegiance to the anti-independence cause, their claims of impartiality can never again be anything other than risible.

The CBI is dead! Long live British farce!

Independence: RGU ‘suspends’ CBI membership

Independence: RGU ‘suspends’ CBI membership | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
ABERDEEN’S Robert Gordon University has “suspended” its membership of the CBI over the industry body’s stance on the Scottish independence referendum.
Peter A Bell's insight:

A blind man could have seen this coming. But apparently Ferdinand von Prondzynski suffers from a particular kind of blindness. With all of Scotland's other universities quitting the CBI, how did he imaging that RGU could possibly be an exception?

The belated, mealy-mouthed "suspension" of RGU's membership does nothing to cover his embarrassment at an appallingly bad and really very stupid decision.

Electoral Commission voids CBI listing as no campaigner in Scotland vote

Electoral Commission voids CBI listing as no campaigner in Scotland vote | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
Commission says it only agreed to the CBI's request to deregister because the wrong official signed the application
Peter A Bell's insight:

This stinks in so many ways. John Cridland originally stated that the decision to register with the Electoral Commission as a permitted participant was taken collectively, at the highest level and in accordance with legal advice. Now we are supposed to believe that following all this high-level decision-making the signing of the documents was left to someone who was unauthorised.

The legal advice must have included details of the procedure involved. The people making the decision had to know how that decision would be implemented. Implementing that decision had to involve instructions being given. If the individual(s) who signed the document was not senior enough to be authorised to do so then they were not senior enough to take this action without instructions.

This situation cannot even be explained by incompetence at the top of the organisation. Although there is certainly abundant evidence of that. The discrepancy between John Cridland's earlier statements and what is being claimed now is just too massive. The account now being given is not only incredible, it is illogical.

The missing element which would at least begin to make sense of the whole fiasco is dishonesty.

Scottish independence: BBC suspends CBI membership

Scottish independence: BBC suspends CBI membership | Referendum 2014 | Scoop.it
THE BBC has announced it has suspended its membership of the CBI following the business lobbying organisation’s decision to register as a supporter of the No campaign.
Peter A Bell's insight:

I read that "the decision had been taken in conjunction with the CBI " and cannot help but suspect that, notwithstanding this token "suspension" of the BBC's membership, the two organisations will continue to work together in the service of the campaign to thwart the aspirations of Scotland's people.

Supporters of Scottish independence have questioned why the BBC has not resigned from the CBI over the business group's referendum stance.

Peter A Bell's insight:

Rather than being urged to resign from the CBI, would it not be more appropriate if the BBC was required to join it in registering as an official part of the anti-independence campaign?
