Multiplatform, free, and powerful. I could be using these terms to describe Mendeley Desktop, but what I'm going to write in this blog post is about something else, something called LaTeX and BibTeX. As you accumulate research papers and references in your library, you’ll find that sometimes the same author may be published with variations of the same name. P. Harvey, Pete Harvey, P. S. Harvey, etc. If this is in fact the same person, it becomes a bit of a mess if you want to filter your references by Author Name. In this case, you can use a simple technique to merge author names together to a single name of your choosing. All research projects involve two types of activity; work that generates novel information that makes a positive contribution to the world's store of knowledge and notifying the world about said novel discovery. Today, the world's largest crowdsourced research library (that's us) released version 1.0 of our desktop software, after almost 3 years in beta.

As I've remarked on prior versions of this – Mendeley and Zotero use the exact same citation styles and thus have the exact same number of citation styles available – which is actually about 300 different styles covering around 2000 ...

The new citation editor introduced for Word on Windows in the previous release is now also available for users of OpenOffice.org and Microsoft Word for Mac. 
A few weeks ago, ProfHacker got a request asking us if we could compare the two platforms, which gave me a great opportunity to try to figure out why I prefer EndNote. In many ways, it comes down to the fact that I’m very, very comfortable with EndNote.
Mendeley uses the Citation Style Language v1.0 to format citations and bibliographies in our Word and OpenOffice plugins. Although we provide styles for 1000+ journals, we realize this isn't enough for everyone.

It appears that I've been living a very sheltered life as far as reference management software goes.

Today we’re delighted to announce that Zotero 3.0 has officially arrived. Zotero 3.0 marks a major departure from previous versions, most notably with the new ability to run outside the Firefox browser.
Mendeley 1.1 is now available. There are several notable improvements to the citation insertion functionality, as well as significant under-the-hood bugfixes and speed + appearance tweaks. You can read the full release notes here.
A preview release of Mendeley Desktop 1.1 is available. This release includes several performance improvements in the Microsoft Word plugins alongside a number of stability and usability enhancements.

It must of course be said that both tools work very well at their primary purposes: managing references and creating citations and bibliographies within documents.
