How To Use Twitter As A Learning Tool

How To Use Twitter As A Learning Tool | Educational Use of Social Media | Scoop.it

First it's important to mention Twitter is easy to incorporate as a learning tool. In fact the hardest part was going through and getting faculty approval. Actually incorporating it into the course design as one of the learning tools was easy, low effort, no cost, and intuitive (Using Twitter As A Learning Tool - Part 1).

Robin Good's curator insight, June 29, 7:20 AM

Happy Friends is a new free tool created by Dave Winer which allows you to closely follow those Twitter accounts for which you don't want to miss a beat.

Happy Friends makes it easy for you to add (but not to delete for now) any Twitter account you want and to easily expand it to see all of its most recent tweets.

The result is a simple interface which lists your favorite Twitter sources and allows you to check rapidly what each one of them has posted.

What may escape anyone not reading this, is that by clicking on any of the headlines displayed inside Happy Friends you get to see the full Twitter card display, just as it was intended to be seen on Twitter with integrated images and video.

Happy Friends fulfils for me a true need, as with Twitter typical readers and tools (including lists) it is very difficult to track specific sources postings without doing a few click acrobatics.

I hope that in one of the upcoming versions, the formatting of the tweets will also be improved as to make it easier for the eye to rapidly scan the information presented. The twitter grey icons on the left do to little to quiet down the noise created by all the the tweet texts and links appearing on the Happy Friends page. Vertical spacing between items and separating text from links would significantly improve legibility and rapid eye-scanning of the content.

Very useful.

Free to use.

Stephen Dale's curator insight, May 9, 4:29 AM

Vellum acts as a reading list  for your Twitter feed, finding all the links that are being shared by those you follow on Twitter and displaying them each with their full titles and descriptions.

This flips the Twitter model, treating the links as primary and the commentary as secondary (you can still see all the tweets about each link, but they are less prominent).

Vellum puts a spotlight on content, making it easy to find what you should read next.

Using Twitter in Academic Teaching [Slideshare]

Much is written about using Twitter for research, but what about using it in learning and teaching? It has plenty of applications there as well.

This workshop presentation (containing a link to the handout) covers what Twitter is, why it's useful, debunks some Twitter myths, and illustrates ideas for Twitter use in modules, lectures and lab-sessions, using current examples from academics. It also covers embedding a Twitter stream in a Blackboard VLE.

Also covers the tools Twtpoll and Tweetbeam.

The role of Twitter in the life cycle of a scientific publication

Twitter is a micro-blogging social media platform for short messages that can have a long-term impact on how scientists create and publish ideas. We investigate the usefulness of twitter in the development and distribution of scientific knowledge.

Via Pierre Levy
more...
luiy's curator insight, May 18, 2013 12:11 PM

Many scientists are making the move towards social media in order to accelerate  and amplify their scientific impact (Fausto et al. 2012; Fox 2012; Piwowar 2013). One in 40 scientists is active on Twitter (Priem et al. 2012a), 25,000 blog entries have been indexed on the Research Blogging platform, and 2 million scientists are using Mendeley, a reference sharing tool (Piwowar 2013). Here, we consider 140 how social media, and Twitter in particular, can influence the life cycle of scientific publication, from inception and collaboration on a spark of an idea to the communication of a finished product. Specifically, we evaluate and discuss the benefits of Twitter for (1) increasing scholarly connections and networks, (2) quickly developing ideas through novel collaborations and pre-review, and (3) amplifying the dissemination and discussion of scientific knowledge both within and beyond the ivory tower of academia.

The impact of scientific papers has traditionally been measured in terms of
numbers of citations (Neylon and Wu 2009). Tweeting can influence this impact metric. For example, articles published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research that were tweeted about frequently in the first three days following publication were 11 times more likely to be highly cited 17 to 29 months later than  less tweeted articles (Eysenbach 2011). In fact, top-cited articles could be predicted quite accurately from their early tweeting frequency (Eysenbach 2011). In a separate study of ~4600 scientific articles published in the preprint database  arXiv.org, Shuai et al. (2012) found that papers with more mentions on Twitter were also associated with more downloads and early citations of papers, although the causality of these relationships is unclear (Shuai et al. 2012).

Tools for Following, Unfollowing and Managing Lists on Twitter

Tools for Following, Unfollowing and Managing Lists on Twitter | Educational Use of Social Media | Scoop.it

It’s been a while since SocialTimes did a round-up of the various tools that helped users manage their Twitter accounts by finding who to follow, following new people, unfollowing many people at once and organizing groups of users they follow into lists.

Since our last round-up, Twitter has restricted use of its API significantly, causing several tools to shut down. No longer functional areUntweeps, Just Unfollow, Twit Cleaner, Who Follows Whom and Tweet Effect. Tweeter Karma is still functional but has had to remove its bulk unfollow tools.

Oh, Twitter. You’re so useful for teachers. You connect educators so that they can share tools, tips and tricks, offer insight, and support one another. You bring your sexy social media-ness into the classroom to keep kids interested in what they’re learning when they think they’re actually (sort of) having fun instead.

7 Outils pour programmer vos Tweets

7 Outils pour programmer vos Tweets | Educational Use of Social Media | Scoop.it

Timely.is
